Trump Lectured on Humility During Iowa Church Stop

Among the many character traits attending Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, it is doubtful that humility is one of them. We’re talking about a guy who literally puts his own name up in lights. A fair characterization of Trump’s campaign platform might be, “I make everything awesome.”

The Donald met with some pushback on that during a campaign stop at an Iowa church on Sunday. The Washington Post reports:

The Bible reading of 1 Corinthians 12 appeared to pique the real estate mogul’s interest and his head turned toward the lectern as a woman from the congregation spoke about humility.

“I also want you to think about how this keeps your significance from getting blown up into self-importance. For no matter how significant you are, it is only because of what you are part of,” the woman said.

“Can you imagine eye telling hand, ‘Get lost, I don’t need you?’ Or, head telling foot, ‘You’re fired, your job has been phased out?’ ” the woman continued.

The unnamed woman was obviously taking some liberties with the biblical text. The point of 1 Corinthians 12 is the unity of the church, not the broader social order. But it’s not the first time someone has tweaked scripture to make a political point.
