The Morning Briefing: The Space Force, PJ Media's Impact, and Much, Much More

Liz is out this morning, but have I got a briefing for you!

On Thursday night, Vice President Mike Pence told America, “May the Space Force be with you.”

“The time has come to establish the Unites States Space Force,” Pence said in a speech to U.S. military and civilian personnel at the Pentagon, CNN’s Ryan Browne reported. The VP cited threats from China and Russia.

“Our Administration will soon take action to implement these recommendations with the objective of establishing the United States Department of the Space Force by 2020,” Pence added.

The VP’s support will help bolster legislation to establish the Department of Jedi Affairs. The Sith Rule of Two also applies in the real world: Russia is the master, and China the apprentice. Or is it the other way around…

The Space Force will be the first new branch of the armed forces since the Air Force was established in the 1940s. If Trump achieves this, he will be forever remembered as the man who made the Jedi Order a reality.

Who was David Garcia’s digital director?

So… I may be partly responsible for a Democrat operative leaving a campaign in Arizona. Yesterday, a friend approached me with a helpful tip about Xenia Orona, who was the digital director for the campaign of David Garcia, the leading Democrat to run against Gov. Doug Ducey (R-Ariz.). I emailed the campaign, requesting comment, giving them about 6.5 hours to respond.

Crickets.

Then I published my story here at PJ Media.

Now, for some reason, they seem to have responded.

I know, I know. I should be overjoyed, right? Actually, I’m a bit concerned. See, David Garcia is an identity politics candidate, running on his Latino heritage and literally his name. Garcia once said, “I believe a Garcia needs to win in Arizona. For this state to really reach its promise, for this state to be fully represented by the people of Arizona, somebody with my last name needs to win.”

Now, that’s not exactly anti-American or anti-Arizona, but it does partly echo the sentiments that got Orona fired led her to resign completely voluntarily. Here’s the key tweet — the one she deleted after my story went up.

Twitter screenshot.

Orona also had tweet after tweet calling for the abolition of the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a position Garcia has adopted. Oh, and Orona denounced “law and order” as “the smokescreen that bigots hide their hate behind.”

Here’s the thing, Garcia almost had to fire Orona, in an effort to demonstrate that this kind of thing is not what his campaign stands for. But he did hire the staffer in the first place, and her rhetoric isn’t exactly out of the norm for her.

Again, the tweet calling America a “sh*thole country” is from this past January. But you know that — it’s in the PJ Media story Garcia’s campaign stumbled across last night.

So I would encourage the Garcia campaign to think long and hard, and to respond well to these issues. At the end of the day, my deepest questions have gone unanswered.

That’s enough from me. Xenia Orona certainly has had enough from me. Here’s some other great stuff from around the Internet.
