A cell phone video of the shooting of Charlotte resident Keith Scott made by his wife at the time of the shooting and given to the New York Times by the family’s lawyers does not show the fatal shot being fired, nor does it settle the question of whether Mr. Scott had a gun.

The wife is insisting to police that her husband doesn’t have a gun, but if that were true, why do the officers say “drop the gun” a dozen times? At one point, Mrs. Scott says “Don’t do it” to her husband — a hint that she feared her husband might somehow threaten the officers. Her lawyer insists that she said that to “get him to stand still” after he eventually got out of the car.
But the video does not confirm any facts in dispute, which is unfortunate. However, I simply can’t imagine the police pretending someone has a gun for purposes of creating a false record of the incident. They are too busy trying to stay alive to concoct a story that an unarmed man had a gun.
