WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that opening an impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump is “about patriotism” and not partisanship.
Pelosi was asked on Tuesday if impeaching Trump would “activate” his base and benefit him politically.
“I don’t think politics has anything to do with this,” Pelosi said at the Atlantic Festival in Washington. “It has nothing to do with politics or partisanship. This is about patriotism, though what’s sad about it is the Republicans have not spoken up about any of this and I would invite them to join us now that we have gotten to this different place.”
Pelosi continued, “We have to have the facts, that’s why I’ve said as soon as we have the facts we’re ready. Now we have the facts, we’re ready for later today.”
Shortly after her comments, Pelosi announced the formal impeachment inquiry.
