Democrat Congressman on ICE, CBP: 'I'm Not a Fan of Continuing to Throw Money at Those Agencies'

WASHINGTON — Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia (D-Ill.) shared his reaction to “Abolish ICE” protestors pulling down the U.S. flag and raising the Mexican flag at an ICE facility in Colorado.

Garcia was asked if he thought raising the Mexican flag was appropriate.

“Those are reactions. They don’t produce the type of outcome that people really want. I think it’s not good to be reactionary when a cause that you are advancing is a legitimate cause and where you are trying to change the impact on the effected people,” Garcia said during an interview on Wednesday.

Garcia mentioned the controversial posts found in the “secret” Facebook group for members of CBP. Garcia, a member of the House Oversight and Government Investigations Committee, said CBP and ICE should not receive additional funding until the “culture” changes.

“I say no further funding of those agencies until we have a culture that is changed and until we get a real assessment of what is needed so I’m not a fan of continuing to throw money at those agencies,” he said. “I want to see a real examination of the people that comprise these entities and of the leadership and the attitudes and the view that they have and the role of those agencies.”
