On Thursday, former Republican Congressman Charlie Dent told CNN that some of his former Republican colleagues in the House of Representatives have privately told him that they’re “disgusted” by President Trump. Dent also said that, if he were in Congress right now, he’d vote to impeach.
“I certainly would have voted for the impeachment inquiry. Based on the facts as I understand them now, I do think this rises to the level of impeachment. I would probably support it,” the anti-Trump former congressman told the anti-Trump channel CNN, according to anti-Trump website The Hill (if ever there was an echo chamber…). However, he added, “I don’t think the Democrats should move forward on impeachment until they hear from some of these primary witnesses, like John Bolton and Mick Mulvaney and the secretary of state himself.”
So he would vote for it, but admits that other witnesses should be heard first in order for him and everybody else to understand what really happened. If that doesn’t sum up the idiocy of the NeverTrump movement, I don’t know what does.
As for his former Republican colleagues, Dent said that he thinks they “are in a situation where they understand their base pressure. The base has not yet bolted from the president.” That is, he added, “why they’re standing with the president for the moment.”
“But,” he continued, “there’s no question, having spoken to many of them privately, they are absolutely disgusted and exhausted by the president’s behavior. They resent being put in this position all the time. I think they’d like to step out but they just can’t because of their base at the moment.” [Emphasis added]
Clearly, Dent is doing a whole lot of “thinking.” He must have a lot of time for that nowadays. After all, he retired in 2018 from politics — or at least from the House of Representatives. At that moment, he had “served” (haha… as if lawmakers “serve” anyone other than their own interests) for 14 years — or 7 terms.
In other words, Dent was and is a creature of The Swamp. It comes as no surprise that he is happy to appear on CNN in order to blast the first Republican president in ages who’s actually serious about reforming Washington and putting American interests first.
