For the life of me, I can’t understand why some on the Right are jumping up and down about Donald Trump and shouting to the heavens that The Donald is no conservative. Everybody knows that. But still we get lectures like this from a very silly “conservative” stamping his tiny feet in the Atlantic: because people like Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin never pay any attention to him:
On paper, this is not someone you’d expect to excel in the 2016 Republican Party primary. But Donald Trump is excelling. Thanks to his celebrity, a few epic flip-flops, and his willingness to pander to the most xenophobic element of the GOP’s base, the real-estate developer and reality-TV star is polling near the top of the field. While he is unlikely to win the nomination, he may well appear at the presidential debates and continue to tarnish the GOP brand in the eyes of Hispanic voters.
Now that Trump is polling at the top of the GOP field, all those conservatives who have in the past treated Limbaugh, Palin, Breitbart.com, and their ilk as credible voices who look out for the best interests of the conservative base are partly responsible for his rise. They’ve helped to create a comical celebrity monster.
A few points about Trump:
- He won’t be president.
- He won’t be the GOP nominee.
- He is running an unapologetic celebrity “campaign” to keep his outsized ego satisfied.
- He will probably be long gone by next summer.
- He’s driving both the Left and the Establishment Right crazy, which is a good thing.
- His wealth — or at least, the simulacrum of wealth — inures him to conventional political attacks.
- He’s a hoot.
So everybody needs to relax about Trump and just humor him. Right now, he’s a battering ram, and the one thing everyone who is not a card-carrying member of the Permanent Bipartisan Fusion Party agrees on is that a good battering is exactly what the political process needs right now.
