On Twitter, Congressman Justin Amash continues his relentless war on President Donald Trump. He now calls Trump “amoral” and “self-serving,” adding that conservatives will one day face the fact that, for all their support of him, he’s repaying them with “bigger government.”
“Conservatives will someday face the horrible truth that the Republican Party fought so hard to justify and excuse an amoral and self-serving president,” Amash writes, “and what he gave them in return was bigger government and erosion of the principles and values they once claimed to cherish.”

His angry rant seems to have been inspired by the House approving a new $1.4 trillion spending package. Republican Congressman Chip Roy opposed both bills, explaining that he wasn’t given time to read them.
Swamp update: received $1.4 Trillion 2313 pages of spending at 4:30pm yesterday. Yet was just noticed we will vote at 1:10-1:25 p.m today – less than 24 hours later. I will vote no on both bills. @realDonaldTrump should veto & @HouseGOP & @SenateGOP should oppose. But… pic.twitter.com/sAO7zt4R0C

About this, Amash wrote that “Pres. Trump said he’d never again sign a rushed omnibus, so Democrats teamed with Trump and Republicans to split the bill into two bills so the president could claim he kept his promise. Now, both parties will pass this swamp legislation, and the president will sign it into law.”

Of course, this isn’t a minor budget. Yes, the federal government continues to spend above its means. This is a problem — there’s no money for any increases, it’s all being borrowed which means that future generations will have to pay it off — but let’s not pretend that Trump is somehow different from most of his predecessor in this regard. Even Ronald Reagan, praised by many conservatives and libertarians, was a Very Big Spender. And let’s not even talk about George W. Bush and Barack H. Obama.
If you look at Trump’s other policies, however, only a fool can pretend that Trump only creates “bigger government and erosion of the principles and values” conservatives and libertarians claim to cherish. Taxes have been cut. Lord knows how many (useless) rules and regulations have been scrapped from the books. New trade deals have been negotiated. Unemployment has hit record low numbers. The Dow Jones has gained 10,000 points since Trump’s election. Median household income has hit the highest level ever recorded. Small businesses have the lowest top marginal tax rate in more than 80 years. ObamaCare’s individual mandate penalty is gone. Coal exports have increased by 60 percent. More circuit court judges have been confirmed than any other (administration). The Iran Deal is no more. The U.S. Embassy in Israel has been moved to Jerusalem. Two fantastic, originalist justices have been appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court…
With some exceptions, Trump’s record is quite simply amazing. It tells us all we need to know about Amash’s recent state of mind that he’s no longer able to see this. Facts are replaced by blind hatred and disgust. What a shame.
