The U.S. Senate race in Michigan should have been an easy hold for Democrats. Then their primary voters wrecked everything. They chose Abdul El-Sayed, and Michigan Democrats are already living with the consequences. The win sent forecasters and prediction markets swinging hard toward Republicans almost overnight. It's quite clear the Democrat establishment knows it's in trouble with El-Sayed, and the party is already in desperation mode.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee wasted no time capitalizing on the Democrats’ El-Sayed problem. The group launched an attack ad branding El-Sayed "the most radical Senate candidate in America," built almost entirely from his own record and his own words, including his description of himself as "pretty damn dangerous." The ad uses El-Sayed’s positions and words against him, and it’s devastating.

It is also working, and Democrats know it. Rather than defend El-Sayed's actual positions, they have latched onto something else entirely: the ad uses his full name, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed. Democrats are calling that a dog whistle, an attempt to invoke anti-Muslim prejudice.
There's just one problem with that theory. El-Sayed has never hidden his own name. In fact, he used it during his 2018 run for Michigan governor.

Let’s be honest: Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed doesn’t sound any more Muslim than Abdul El-Sayed does. Using his full legal name instead of his shortened name is no different than calling me Matthew instead of Matt. And usually, when someone calls me by my full first name, it means I’m in trouble. Well, Abdul… I mean Abdulrahman… is definitely in trouble. Are Democrats seriously suggesting that voters had no idea who El-Sayed is or what faith he practices, and that this ad somehow “exposed” him?
Essentially, that is what they are saying.

"Republicans have a very strong background and history of using race, culture, and any demo that is not Christian, as something that is an aligning power for white supremacy," Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross told TbheGrio. "For them, this has worked in the past, and they always like to bring back the greatest hits."
This is a distraction, nothing more. Arguing that voters would not otherwise know El-Sayed is Muslim is pretty dumb, and Democrats know it too. It's the only card left to play when your candidate's own record is the problem.

Democrats are going to need a stronger argument than an ad that simply used a candidate's real name, because right now that is all they have got. Only one side of this fight seems obsessed with identity, and it is not the Republicans.
What all this really proves is simple. Democrats know exactly how much trouble they are in with El-Sayed on the ballot, and screaming racism over his own name is the only play they have left.
