The Left Must Take Responsibility for Its Dangerous Rhetoric

Two National Guardsmen were shot in a targeted attack in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, leaving both critically wounded. Law enforcement officials confirm this was a targeted attack. Now, once again, we have to ask some uncomfortable questions about how we got here, why it seems like political violence keeps happening, and why it seems to be coming from one side in particular.

Look, we have to be honest here about what’s been happening in our country, and we can’t pretend that politics didn’t play a role in this shooting. For months now, the left has demonized the National Guard for their involvement in controlling crime and enforcing immigration laws where local officials have refused to act.

In fact, a day before the shooting, Democrat Rep. Jasmine Crockett called these troops "slave patrols" targeting minorities.

“I’ll say it again,” she said. “Donald Trump's mass deportation system makes me think of what a modern-day slave patrol would look like. Slave patrols were armed groups empowered by the government to control, intimidate, and terrorize people solely based on color. That's what's happening now.”

She continued, “Donald Trump is sending mass agents without warrants into communities of color to terrorize the people who live there.”

This trend of hostile rhetoric goes beyond Crockett. As we’ve previously reported, six Democrats in Congress recently urged military members to refuse "illegal orders" from President Trump, and they’ve typically referred to Trump’s use of the National Guard to enforce immigration law as a potential example.

Is there a connection? Ken Dilanian of MSNOW (formerly MSNBC) made a connection between the two on Wednesday afternoon. “Uh, but of course, you know, there's so much controversy happening in the United States right now,” he said. “With ICE who are also wearing uniforms, uh, and, and wearing masks, and, uh, so th- there's...Y- you don't know, uh...People walking around with uniforms, um, i- uh, i- in an American city, there are some Americans that might object to that, eh, and so, uh, apparently this shooting has happened.”

Despite calls for calm after previous violent episodes—including the assassination attempt on Trump and attacks on ICE agents—Democrats don’t seem to care about how their radical rhetoric incites violence. At this point, I can’t give them the benefit of the doubt and say they don’t realize what they’re doing. This attack on National Guardsmen, targeted and unprovoked, underscores just how nasty and inflammatory the Democrats’ rhetoric is.

How much longer will this rhetoric continue? How many people have to be hurt or killed for Democrats to realize what they’re doing is wrong?
