The Left Can Handle Tyranny, Just Not Humor

I’m not sure what’s funnier—the way Trump gleefully mocked the “No Kings” protesters in his latest video, or the way the left lost its mind over it. Their reaction made it look like he’d just granted a preemptive pardon to his entire family or something crazy like that. But beneath their manufactured outrage lies something darker: a relentless double standard, a simmering hostility that comes alive every time Trump challenges the narrative.

Trump posted a video on the TruthSocial platform depicting him as a “Top Gun”-styled fighter pilot wearing a crown and dropping what looked unmistakably like feces on crowds of “No Kings” protesters. Obviously, it went viral, and supporters saw it as another moment of Trump’s unrivaled ability to harness social media to his advantage.

Of course, it totally triggered the left, with critics calling it grotesque and unpresidential, blah, blah, blah.

One such media critic was CNN’s Jake Tapper. On Monday night’s edition of “The Lead,” Tapper bizarrely took the video literally and suggested that Trump’s point was that “he wishes he could drop feces on his fellow Americans?”

Political commentator Shermichael Singleton responded with a shrug and a grin that said plenty about the political mood of the moment. “Look, this is what I think,” he began. “I think a lot of Republicans look at this. And I've texted a lot of folks about it. They thought it was hilarious. They thought it was funny.” Even some Democrats, Singleton added, acknowledged Trump’s knack for manipulating outrage and humor. “You know, I got to give it to Trump. He is good at sort of goading our side with some of these sort of satirical videos and other memes that he typically would post on social media. It makes him more relatable to the average person.”

“You wouldn't typically see this from a president,” he continued, “but the average person looks at this, Jake, and they sort of laugh or they dislike it. But I don't think it's something to sort of set your hair on fire over.”

In short: It’s a joke and not to be taken seriously. Imagine being so offended by that video after defending the Biden administration tooth and nail for four years. Think about everything Biden did, and we’re expected to take the left's outrage over a video seriously?

I’m old enough to remember when Joe Biden stood at Independence Hall in Philadelphia in September 2022 and delivered the most chilling presidential address in modern American history. The stage was bathed in blood-red lighting, Biden was flanked by Marines standing at attention like props in a twisted campaign ad, and the whole thing looked like a scene ripped from 1930s Europe.

Biden’s rhetoric wasn’t subtle, either. He painted pro-Trump Republicans — roughly half the country — as a “clear and present danger” to American democracy. “It’s in our hands, yours and mine, to stop the assault on American democracy,” he warned with all the gravitas of a wartime address. “I believe America is at an inflection point, one of those moments that determine the shape of everything that’s to come after.”

He was framing Trump supporters as an ongoing existential threat, suggesting the very survival of the nation hung in the balance. “For a long time, we’ve reassured ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed. But it is not,” Biden declared. “We have to defend it. Protect it. Stand up for it. Each and every one of us.”

“MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards,” Biden continued, listing off a greatest-hits compilation of Democrat talking points. “Backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love.”

Then-President Biden's message was chillingly clear: If you’re pro-life, defend traditional marriage, or dare to question the progressive agenda, you are now an enemy of the state. Labeling citizens a “clear and present danger” isn’t just political theater; it’s the kind of language used to justify stripping Americans of their constitutional rights, from free speech to a free press. Biden was openly flirting with the authoritarianism the left claims to abhor, yet it explodes in outrage over a harmless Trump meme.

Maybe the left could use a sense of humor — and a crash course in history.
