The Democratic Party is in a mess, and it’s not hard to see why. The Schumer Shutdown drags on, and the Democrats refuse to budge—even without any real leverage. But the real problem isn’t Republicans; it’s their own party. Behind the scenes, even some Democrats are quietly questioning the strategy that has locked them in place.
Make no mistake: the longer the government stays shut down, the more obvious it becomes that Democrats aren’t negotiating with Republicans—they’re negotiating with their own radical base. Fear runs deep in the ranks. Senators whisper about “backlash” and “political suicide” if they vote to reopen the government without far-left concessions. What started as a standoff with the GOP has become a test of whether the Democratic Party can control the activists it unleashed.
Behind closed doors, some Democrats admit they’re uneasy about the direction this fight has taken. They know this kind of brinkmanship can backfire. But saying so out loud could be political suicide. The radical left-wing of the party—the same crowd that floods social media with hashtags, fundraising appeals, and protest footage—has made clear that anything short of total resistance to Trump is betrayal. Senators who even hint at compromise risk being “hammered” by their own supporters.
The “No Kings” protests have energized their base, and that’s actually not a good thing. They are demanding Democrats refuse any deal that doesn’t include sweeping liberal concessions—you know, the $1.5 trillion for free health care for illegals, circumcisions and vasectomies in Zambia, electric buses in Rwanda, pastry classes and dance programs for male sex workers in Haiti, media groups supporting Palestinians, transgender programs in Nepal, a pride parade in Lesotho, social media mentorship in Serbia, and LGBTQI initiatives across the Western Balkans and Uganda.
The rhetoric has been fiery, the messaging relentless, and the fear it has produced inside the Democratic caucus is palpable. Most Democratic senators now refuse to support any bill reopening the federal government unless it comes with major wins for their party. And, I wouldn’t expect Republicans to cave on this.
Democrats seem eager to vote to end the shutdown, but can’t.
“We would have enough votes” to reopen the government “if people were not terrified of getting the guillotine,” a Democrat close to the situation told The Hill.
Moderates see the trap forming, but they aren’t sure how to escape it. The modern Democratic Party’s funding machine runs on outrage—and outrage is profitable. Online donations spike every time a Democrat punches back at Trump, no matter the policy consequences.
ICYMI: This Could Be the Worst News for Democrats About the Shutdown
Behind the scenes, Senate leadership knows some of their members are desperate for a resolution. They just can’t afford to cross the activists who now essentially police the party. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has worked to peel off enough Democratic votes to reopen the government, but Democrats insist Republicans aren’t negotiating in good faith. That claim plays well with the left-wing base, even if it keeps Washington gridlocked, but doesn’t reflect reality. Democrats have a clean CR they could vote for right now to get the government up and running again and free up time to negotiate. They just can’t.
The Democrats can keep pretending this is about principle, but the truth is staring them in the face: they’re in the middle of a full-blown hostage crisis—and the hostage is their own party. They’ve surrendered their backbone to a mob that rewards extremism and punishes common sense, leaving them paralyzed and afraid to act. This isn’t governing—it’s performance art for the online outrage machine. If any of them want to be taken seriously again, they’ll have to escape the echo chamber and start acting like adults. America is still waiting for someone—anyone—in that party to show real leadership.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is still ongoing, and polls are now showing Americans are increasingly blaming the Democrats for this mess, but we can’t let them spin their way out of it.
