The Democratic Party has undergone a dangerous transformation over the past decade, morphing from a mainstream center-left political party into something radical and unrecognizable. What started as legitimate policy disagreements has devolved into reflexive, almost pathological opposition to anything bearing Donald Trump's name—even when those policies align perfectly with positions Democrats championed in the recent past.
Consider border security, where the about-face has been nothing short of stunning. Before Trump descended that golden escalator in 2015, Democrats routinely spoke tough on immigration enforcement. Party leaders like Chuck Schumer, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton thundered about illegal immigration undermining American workers. Obama even deported millions while Democrats nodded approvingly. Hillary even used to support a border wall.
Then Trump made a border wall his signature issue, and suddenly Democrats decided that borders were racist constructs designed by white supremacists. Overnight, the party that once understood basic sovereignty transformed into cheerleaders for sanctuary cities and catch-and-release policies that would make previous Democratic leaders cringe with embarrassment.
This phenomenon extends far beyond immigration. The evidence that Democrats simply oppose Trump policies because of the messenger rather than the message has become overwhelming, creating a political landscape where yesterday's Democratic orthodoxy becomes today's fascism if Trump happens to agree with it.
The latest example perfectly illustrates this maddening dynamic: President Trump recently signed an executive order mandating up to one year in jail for protesters who burn American flags, directing Attorney General Pam Bondi to prioritize enforcement of criminal and civil laws against flag desecration. The order authorizes vigorous prosecution and potential litigation to clarify First Amendment exceptions, while also directing officials to deny or revoke visas, residence permits, naturalization, and other immigration benefits for foreign nationals who engage in flag-burning activities.
Now, reasonable people can certainly debate this policy on First Amendment grounds. The Supreme Court has ruled that flag burning constitutes protected speech, which puts the future of this executive order in doubt. Constitutional conservatives have legitimate concerns about government overreach, even when targeting deeply offensive behavior.
But here's where things get interesting—and revealing—about modern Democratic priorities.
A recently resurfaced 2006 clip shows then-Senator Hillary Clinton passionately advocating for a law criminalizing flag burning and desecration. Clinton supported the "Flag Protection Act" with the kind of moral clarity that Democrats once brought to defending American symbols and values.

"Flag burning is a deeply offensive act," Hillary declared, describing it as something that "disrespects the nation, belittles veterans' sacrifices, and sends a disrespectful message to soldiers protecting freedom." She even referenced the 2003 Supreme Court case Virginia v. Black, which ruled that burning crosses with intent to intimidate constitutes a crime, drawing a direct parallel to flag burning.
Hillary emphasized how strongly Americans feel about the flag and explicitly supported "prohibiting and preventing flag burning and desecration through legislation." This wasn't some off-the-cuff remark or political calculation—Clinton was articulating what most Democrats then considered common sense: that certain symbols deserve protection from deliberate desecration.
Today, President Trump will sign an executive order cracking down on those who burn the American flag.

Before Democrats pretend to be outraged, here's Hillary Clinton in 2006:

Joe Biden similarly once called for making flag burning illegal too.

Fast-forward to today, and the same party that was okay with banning flag burning is now shrieking about Trump's “authoritarianism.” The policy hasn't changed meaningfully. The legal questions remain identical. The only difference is the man signing the order.
This isn't principled opposition based on evolving constitutional understanding or new legal precedent. This is pure partisan reflex, the kind of knee-jerk contrarianism that has pushed Democrats so far from more mainstream policy positions that both parties could agree on.
The tragedy is that legitimate constitutional concerns about the right to burn the flag get lost in this partisan theater. When Democrats oppose everything Trump does simply because he does it, they forfeit the moral authority to make meaningful distinctions between policies that deserve criticism and those that might have merit.
Americans notice this hypocrisy. They remember when Democrats sounded like normal people rather than campus radicals. They see through the manufactured outrage and recognize opposition that's more about settling scores than protecting principles. This reflexive anti-Trump positioning hasn't just radicalized the Democratic Party—it has rendered them politically irrelevant on issues where they once commanded respect and credibility.
