On Tuesday, media mogul Rupert Murdoch announced his engagement to former supermodel Jerry Hall. This will be Murdoch’s fourth marriage and Hall’s first, despite her decade-long romance with Rolling Stones front man Sir Mick Jagger.
The announcement, published in the UK paper “The Times” in the Births, Marriages, and Deaths section, kept it short and sweet: “Mr. Rupert Murdoch, father of Prudence, Elisabeth, Lachlan, James, Grace and Chloe Murdoch, and Miss Jerry Hall, mother of Elizabeth, James, Georgia and Gabriel Jagger, are delighted to announce their engagement.” What a sizable family!
Murdoch, born in Australia but a naturalized U.S. citizen, owns 120 newspapers in five countries, including the Wall Street Journal, New York Post, and Britain’s The Sun. He also controls 21st Century Fox, which owns cable networks such as Fox News and movie studios. In 2013, the media mogul divorced his third wife, Wendi Dong, a former executive at Murdoch-owned Star TV in China. He said their marriage, after 14 years, had been irretrievably broken.
Though Jerry Hall has said she was married to Mick Jagger for more than 20 years, Jagger claimed that they were never legally married during divorce proceedings in 1999 and a British court declared the marriage legally invalid. Before her relationship with Jagger, Hall was engaged to marry British pop star Bryan Ferry, front man of the band Roxy Music.
