When Stephen Callaghan, a dad in Australia, recently discovered what his daughter did on a field trip, he decided to express his displeasure with her school. Ruby, who is a Year 6 student (which is the same as 6th grade in the U.S.) returned home to tell her father that the boys in her class spent the day at Bunnings — a DIY hardware store. The girls? They went to the school library to get their hair and makeup done.
Callaghan, like so many parents in recent years, was appalled by the sexism displayed at Ruby’s school. But rather than send your run-of-the-mill angry parent note, he had a little fun with the delicate topic.
In a letter, which he later posted to Twitter, Callaghan informed the school that when Ruby left in the morning it was 2017 and that when she returned, it was 1968 — thanks to the drastically different field trips the boys and girls attended.
“Are you able to search the school buildings for a rip in the space-time continuum? Perhaps there is a faulty Flux Capacitor hidden away in the girls’ toilet block?” he wrote.
He closed the letter, which was addressed to the principle, with his expectations of the school: “I look forward to this being rectified and my daughter and other girls at the school being returned to this millennium where school activities are not divided sharply along gender lines.”
