Every time Prince George or Princess Charlotte step out of their house, the world takes a collective gasp and then lets out a big “Awwww!” Their outfits are always so perfectly adorable that people can’t help but scroll through photo after photo of them online. Well, it looks like we may have our own version of that happening right here in America.
Ivanka Trump’s three small children made waves with their adorable inauguration outfits last week. Kate Bowen, the founder of Petit Peony, was asked by the new first daughter to design outfits for Arabella, Joseph, and Theodore. The designer was taken aback by the request. While Ivanka had previously been a customer, the designer wasn’t expecting a call for the inauguration. But she was undoubtedly up to the challenge.
Yahoo Style had the story:
Bowen assumed Trump would want something more formal. “My dresses are high-end play dresses,” she explains. “It’s about being comfortably adorable. I typically try to stick with soft cottons.” As it turns out, her approach to children’s style is one that resonates with the public, as the Trump effect is proving to be similar to the Prince George effect, through which his Rachel Riley attire instantly sold out.
“People are emailing me asking about these coats and dresses and where to buy them and find them,” Bowen says. “I have to figure that part out. Our website hits have been off the charts. You can’t plan for things like this.”
Bowen communicated with Trump via email and had a Skype session with the children to determine sizes. Bowen sent sketches, Trump sent inspiration photos, and soon enough several beautiful outfits were being brought to New York for the fitting.
“When I went to New York for the first fitting, they asked me to do an additional outfit for Arabella, that ivory dress, coat, and blouse that she wore on Saturday. I hand-delivered the final products,” Bowen says. “I created four rompers for the boys, and I made three dresses Arabella. I sent two coats for Arabella — the navy blue wool and the ivory wool.”
Working with Trump was, well, seamless. “Ivanka and I exchanged emails. She’s very nice, very responsive,” she says. “I was so nervous bringing the dresses to New York, and they were so appreciative and gracious. She just wore it. They didn’t ask for any alterations. They’re easygoing, down-to-earth people.”
Since the clothes that Bowen created for the president’s grandchildren were custom-made, they weren’t immediately available on her site. But she has since launched the Inaugural Collection, inspired by the clothes she made for the children, and they are just too cute.
