'Comedy Gives Back' Proves People Can Make a Difference -- But Not the Way They Expected

So being a genetically programmed pessimistic misanthrope and contrarian, I was all geared up to bash Comedy Gives Back.

This 24-hour telethon airing November 6-7 is raising money for “Malaria No More, a charitable organization striving to end deaths from malaria.”

My immediate reaction was, “Oh, great. More damn mosquito nets.”

See, liberal idiots have been pushing mosquito nets on Africans for generations as a way to (sort of) prevent malaria, when every smart conservative knows there’s already a cheap, easy, safe, proven way to prevent malaria: spraying DDT all over the joint.

Alas, thanks to colossal fraud Rachel Carson, her privileged know-nothing admirers, and all their junk science, most folks still think DDT makes people sick.

DDT’s exaggerated dangers were debunked long ago, but so many progressives cling to emotion and dramatic narratives over cold hard facts — no matter how many black strangers have to die so white leftists can keep feeling self-righteous.

I figured the folks at Malaria No More were still pushing the anti-DDT message, one that would get a boost after A-list comics like Marc Maron, Adam Carolla, Eugene Mirman and Kevin Nealon performed on the Comedy Gives Back telethon.

Then I visited MalariaNoMore.org.

Yes, the group hands out mosquito nets, but they do a lot more, such as making state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment options easily available.

Then, invited to “Read our DDT policy,” I did:

Dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane, better known as DDT, is one of the chemicals used for Internal Residual Spraying. In the 1960s, DDT use was outlawed by most of the world for agricultural use. While the chemical remained legal for malaria control, it became nearly impossible to procure. However, in 2000, the World Heath Organization approved DDT as one of 12 insecticides safe for use in indoor residual spraying and in 2006, the organization began actively supporting DDT for use in malaria control.

While MNM’s focus is on advocacy, awareness raising and strategic investments, we do support a comprehensive set of solutions to combat malaria—including proven interventions like indoor residual spraying. The use of DDT—or any indoor residual spray— is determined by each country’s National Malaria Control Program. Malaria No More supports the leadership of African countries and the World Health Organization, and we welcome smart, proven and safe solutions that help end deaths by this disease.

And don’t doubt it for a moment:

If it hadn’t been for “crazy right wingers” challenging the received liberal wisdom about the “evils” of DDT all these years, there’s no way the WHO and groups like Malaria No More would be as open as they are to using it, and who knows how many lives have been saved.

So hang in there, my fellow “global warming” “denialists” — one day we might very well get the last laugh.
