WASHINGTON — Actor Scott Foley of ABC’s Scandal said he would not be “surprised” if GOP presumptive nominee Donald Trump finds some support in Hollywood.
Foley was asked about writers in Hollywood who have heard that some in the entertainment world are privately supporting Trump.
“I haven’t heard that but it’s not surprising to me, I mean there are — Trump speaks to a lot of different people and I think there are a lot of disenfranchised people with regards to the government and the way the government is run, and if he is your cup of tea, and if that’s the way you’re leaning, to each his own,” Foley said at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. “There’s a reason that we are all allowed to vote independently here, and it’s a great system.”
Foley said he personally believes in Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s message but finds her challenger, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), appealing as well.
“I’ve met Hillary and a lot of my friends are campaigning for her and I believe in her message but I think Bernie is an interesting, you know, you don’t want to call him an outsider because he has been in politics for years and years and years, but with regards to running the country, I think he wants to do things a little bit differently,” he said. “I think there is an interesting message and I think an important message that he keeps talking about with regards to the growing gap in inequality between rich and poor, so I’m going to be watching very closely as we get closer to the election.”
Foley said Trump might be the “best bet” for any voters who feel Washington is not being run correctly.
“I don’t necessarily know if I agree with that, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion,” he said. “I am not going to say who am I going to be supporting at this time.”
Actor Jeff Goldblum, best known for his roles in Jurassic Park and Independence Day, was asked what he would say to Sanders, the only presidential candidate to attend the dinner, if he met him.
“Senator Sanders, I’d like to say, first of all, thank you for being you and being on this planet at the same time as myself, I enjoy you – and I think he is a wonderful man,” Goldblum said.
When asked if he supports Sanders, Goldblum said, “I support everything he does. And it looks like Hillary will get the nomination, and I also support her and I will be thrilled to have her be president.”
Goldblum was asked about polls that show Trump has a great deal of support in California.
“You know, more power to him and I imagine and hope that water will seek its own level and stability and intelligence will win the day and he’ll do whatever he is best suited for in some entertaining corner of the culture,” he said.
Goldblum, who stars in the upcoming film Independence Day: Resurgence, was asked if he thinks Hollywood would be energized to vote for Clinton in a general election.
“What do I know? I don’t have my finger on any part of the Hollywood political overview, but yes,” he said.
Candace Cameron Bure, who stars in Fuller House and co-hosts The View, said Trump is resonating with voters because “they feel like they can relate to him.”
“They have seen him on TV every day and they feel like he can create jobs and he’s a businessman for the hardworking, middle-class person,” she said.
Bure, a registered Republican, said she is still undecided.
“I do like him personally. As president, I’m not sure,” she said. “I’m on the fence…president is like a big deal.”
