CNN has a handful of early photos, which capture a sense of the horrific destruction caused by the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that impacted the island of Haiti late Tuesday afternoon.

The Anchoress adds:

The people of Haiti are perhaps the poorest in the Western Hemisphere. An Earthquake registering 7.0 on the Richter Scale. You’ll recall, the San Francisco earthquake of 1989 was also 7.0, and it pancaked portions of a bridge. Haiti has not got California’s stringent building codes, and they certainly do not build to survive quakes.

Update: Found via Twitter, before and after photos at top of post dramatically illustrate destruction to the Haitian Presidential Palace.
