Will Hillary Be the New O.J.?

Al Jazeera America — remember them? they’re the guys who bought Al Gore’s cable channel and are now about to go under — reported Wednesday night that Hillary Clinton will “soon” be facing an interrogation (aka “an interview”) by James Comey & Co. of the FBI.

Just because they’re Al Jazeera doesn’t mean they’re wrong. They’re most probably right, in fact. The end game in the Great Hillary Clinton Email Scandal (GHCES) is coming soon. The twin questions are how soon and, more importantly, whether she will get away with it, whether she will be indicted.

You would think that someone who kept all of her known government emails on an ad hoc home server, including umpteen that would normally be designated classified and some 22 that are so top secret the State Department doesn’t dare reveal their contents to the prying eyes of the public, would be in deep trouble.(Since we’ve already seen satellite photos of North Korean nuclear installations that were housed on her server, one wonders what — times 22 — could be more secret than that. Well, somebody knows.)

Moreover, Hillary erased some 30,000 “personal” emails, detailing yoga lessons and wedding plans supposedly, among other things too intimate to disclose, from her hard drive before anyone got their hands on them. What would Agatha Christie make of that?  (I know — Dame Agatha way predates hard drives. How about Robert Bryndza, currently Amazon’s number one mystery author whose debut novel, The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard, became a huge best seller and has grown into a best-selling series of five books?)

And then there’s the question of the unsecured BlackBerry that Hillary carried everywhere (see: Boston Herald’sBlackBerry-crazed Hillary Clinton ignored warnings about email security“), including who knows how many foreign countries (Hillary brags of visiting dozens), and that could be easily accessed by any precocious twelve-year-old with a laptop from Sandusky to Kuala Lumpur.

Either of two things are operable here. One, Hillary was so cut out of any significant decisions of the Obama administration that it was all irrelevant or, two, virtually every country and terror group west of the Philippines knows every state secret of the United States.  (The second might be an exaggeration, but not by much. In fact, it’s highly likely to be at least partially true.)

You would think someone like that, someone that is so almost incomprehensibly arrogant and negligent, would be in a heap of trouble — at the very least, not running for president. But then you would have thought O.J. Simpson would have been guilty of double murder when they found Ron Goldman’s DNA in the blood in O.J.’s Bronco. How the hell did that get there when O.J. didn’t even know Goldman? (I know — Detective Vannatter planted it.  Or was it Mark Fuhrman? )

Do we need a reminder of why I make this comparison of Hillary and O.J.?  Justice, alas, is not always served. (Yes, eventually O.J. got his, but not in the way he should have.)

Hillary is much better protected. She doesn’t need Johnny Cochran or the rest of the “Dream Team.” She’s got something even more powerful than low-rent appeals to racism and phony charades about gloves that are somehow too small.  She’s got the president of the United States and the mainstream media in her corner. Working together, as they so often do, they have the ability to pervert justice, as we used to say, nine ways to Brooklyn. With their help, the chances of an indictment are slim, of a trial even thinner.

Were there to be a trial, however, and even if there weren’t, the real defendants would be the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law. They disappear if Hillary gets off — as does our country as we know it.  I have written this before, but I can’t write it too many times. It’s that serious.

But in fairness to the other side — you are concerned about “fairness,” aren’t you — I will offer Hillary’s esteemed attorney David Kendall a properly mendacious catch phrase à la Cochran with which to wrap his summation dramatically: “If the emails are merely suspect, you must elect.”

I know it’s not as pithy — doesn’t have quite that certain je ne sais quoi — as “if the glove doesn’t fit, you must acquit.”  (Readers may have better suggestions.) But it should work under the circumstances.

After all, all you need to do is get her elected.  After that, it doesn’t matter.  Unlike O.J., there’s no Goldman family to sue her. (Oh, yes, those Benghazi parents.  But we all know they’re lying, right?…. Right?)
