It’s only January 10, but we may already have a winner for the most stupid and obnoxious tweet of the year.
Ira Madison III, culture writer for MTV News, really distinguished himself on Twitter this morning during the confirmation hearing of Jeff Sessions for attorney general:

The obnoxious tweet spurred immediate outrage, and not just from those on the right:
Disgusting tweet. The little girl is his granddaughter. Delete your account and find some humanity. https://t.co/8OZUtY5FcA

As CNN’s Jake Tapper helpfully pointed out, it’s common practice for nominees to bring grandchildren to hearings:

Via Hot Air, Madison offered the following explanation:
I often tell jokes, but seeing as bringing up Sessions’ history of racial hatred of Asians is seen as an attack on his grandchild, I deleted
— Ira Madison III (@ira) January 10, 2017
This twerp no grown-up had even heard of until today eventually deleted his offensive tweet, but kept on digging.
“There is no reason for that child to be in his lap in a hearing other than to send an ‘I’m not racist message,'” he explained in another tweet, which was also eventually deleted.
In response to the blowback, Madison also tweeted, “Session Hive is out in force today.”
Late Tuesday afternoon, he decided to protect his tweets.
The appalling episode brings to mind another instance in which lefties thought it was appropriate to mock conservatives for having diversity in their families.
In 2013, MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry infamously hosted a panel that mocked Mitt Romney because in a family picture he was holding his adopted black grandson.
