Obama: 'The GOP Created Environment Where Trump Could Thrive'

At the joint news conference with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada at the White House today, President Barack Obama — aka “the Divider-in-Chief” —  blamed the Republican Party’s rhetoric and opposition for the rise of Donald Trump.  Obama said the idea that his policies and tactics could have somehow contributed to Trump’s rise is “novel,” to the delight of chuckling reporters.


Obama said the Republican base has been “fed” for years the notion that everything he does should be opposed and that compromise with him is a “betrayal.”

Obama said he never asked for Trump or anyone else to question his birth certificate, or whether he’s American or whether he has the country’s “best interests at heart.”

“All those efforts created an environment where somebody like a Donald Trump can thrive. He’s just doing more of what has been done for the last seven-and-a-half years,” the president said.

He argued that there is no “massive difference” between Trump’s positions on immigration and those held by Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, despite the senators’ families being the “products of immigration and the openness of our society.”

“Mr. Trump might just be more provocative in terms of how he says it,” said Obama.

He added that he welcomes a “serious, effective Republican Party, in part to challenge some of the blind spots and dogma in the Democratic Party.”

Obama said he believes it’s his responsibility to “bridge divides” and that “common ground exists all across the country.”

“I’m not going to validate some notion that the Republican crack-up that’s been taking place is a consequence of actions that I’ve taken,” he said.

This, of course, is complete hokum. Obama is gaslighting the American people again — trying to make them doubt their own senses. He says with a straight face that he believes it’s his responsibility to “bridge divides”  yet he is the one known as the “Divider-in-Chief.” He is the one who gleefully pit one group of Americans against the other from his first days in office – something Americans had never seen a president do. Obama’s own unpresidential demagoguery has paved the way for another, even more unpresidential demagogue.


It was Obama himself who polluted the political environment with his Alinskyite antics from his first days in office. Vast numbers of Americans are completely fed up with his constant lying, scapegoating, targeting of conservatives, corruption, overreach and constitutional abuses. One of Obama’s biggest legacies will be his arrogant, authoritarian executive overreach, which he justified by proudly proclaiming he would work around the law-making branch of government because it has refused to do what he wanted.

“We are not just going to be waiting for legislation in order to make sure that we’re providing Americans the kind of help that they need,” Obama said in Jan. 2014.  “I’ve got a pen, and I’ve got a phone. And I can use that pen to sign executive orders and take executive actions and administrative actions that move the ball forward…”

The secret to Trump’s rise is not that Republicans opposed Obama too much, creating a toxic environment in which an unprincipled blowhard could thrive. It’s that they didn’t oppose him enough.

In January of 2009, conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh made huge political waves when he said that he hoped Obama would fail. Well, Obama didn’t fail. He has been largely successful in fundamentally transforming the nation. That’s why in 2016, Republicans are in the mess they’re in. They didn’t try hard enough to stop it.


Obama may be the most successful president in our nation’s history at getting his agenda passed and implemented.  Unfortunately, Obama’s success has led to our decline as a nation, and many Americans want their country back.

That’s why so many voters are drawn to Trump, the candidate who promises to “make America great again.”
