So far, Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi has called for the release of the “Blind Sheikh” Abdul Rahman — the convicted mastermind of the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993 — released 25 convicted terrorists from Egyptian prisons, and met with the leaders of the Gaza-based terror organization Hamas. President Obama invited Mursi to the White House in September. What would Morsi have to do to get disinvited? Eat babies?
America may have to deal with unsavory governments as a matter of national interest, but an ostentatious welcome to the leader of a terrorist organization — the Muslim Brotherhood — who embraces as a comrade the most notorious jihadi terrorist in an American prison is an utterly reprehensible betrayal of American national security interests. PJ Media’s own Andrew McCarthy, the federal prosecutor who convicted the World Trade Center bombers, explained the nature of the beast in a July 23 post here.
It’s no surprise that Morsi would embrace Hamas, which “was founded in 1987 (during the First Intifada) as an offshoot of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood” (Wikipedia). As the Jerusalem Post reports this morning,
Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh is expected to meet in Cairo on Thursday with Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi. Haniyeh, who left the Gaza Strip through the Rafah border terminal Wednesday, is accompanied by a 17-member delegation of Hamas officials and businessmen. He will be the second Hamas leader to meet with Mursi since the latter assumed power. Last week, Mursi met with Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal.
Haniyeh’s objective is to eliminate border controls for people and goods between Egypt and Gaza. Egypt and Israel controlled the Gaza border to limit the supplies of weapons to terrorists. According to the Israeli Army,
Since Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005, terrorists have fired more than 8,000 rockets into Israel. Over one million Israelis are currently living under threat of rocket attacks. In 2011 alone, 627 rockets from Gaza hit Israeli towns. That’s an even higher number than in 2010, when 231 rockets hit Israel. Since 2001, more than 12,800 rockets and mortars, an average of 3 attacks every single day, have landed in Israel.
Morsi just released 25 leaders of terrorist organizations jailed for violent attacks, an al-Qaeda leader announced July 21:
Mohamed al-Zawahiri, brother of Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, has said that the 572 military detainees pardoned by President Mohamed Morsy on Thursday included 25 leaders of Islamic Jihad and Jama’a al-Islamiya [Sheikh Abdul Rahman’s organization].
He said the decree did not pardon those involved in cases dating back to 1994 that involve the activities of militants who fought the government of ousted President Hosni Mubarak in an insurgency in the early 1990s.
It also excluded the defendents in the so-called Zeitoun Trial, who were accused of membership in an unspecified terrorist organization that staged the armed robbery of a jewelry shop in May 2008 in Cairo’s Zeitoun district, and planned to attack Suez Canal, he said.
Cases that the judiciary is still considering, such as those of Mostafa Hamza, Refaee Taha and Shawky al-Islamboly, were not included either, Zawahiri said.
No responsible American official — let alone the president — should sit down with terrorists. The only Americans they should meet are clandestine services personnel with weapons. America should employ its covert resources to eradicate the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Jama’a al-Islamiya, and other violent jihadist organizations.
Of course, that’s just my personal opinion. Others may disagree about the merits of hunting down and killing terrorists who plot mass murder of Americans and our allies. But it won’t sit well with most American voters for their president to roll out the red carpet to the buddies of the people who tried to bring down the World Trade Center. The number of liberals who believe that our colonialist sins somehow justify the homicidal rage of jihadists is very, very small.
The February 1993 WTC bombing killed six people and injured more than 1,000. Had it been successful, it would have murdered many thousands. Here’s a thought: When Mohamed Morsi turns up at the White House, Rep. Bachmann could lead a demonstration outside. Hold up pictures of the six victims. Bring their families and some of the injured Americans to talk to the media. Make it personal. Put the onus on Obama. Our dead and injured deserve better than to see the perpetrators’ friends welcomed at the White House. If Sen. McCain wants to organize a counter-demonstration to support the Muslim Brotherhood, that’s his right. See how that goes down with the voters in Arizona.
