Star Trek Finally Returning to Television, Where It Belongs

It’s been ten years since a new episode of Star Trek was broadcast on television. Fans had resigned themselves to surviving on the J.J. Abrams films which, while Trek in name, lack the fundamental spirit of the franchise.

Well Trekkies, the future is now. CBS has announced that a new Trek show will premiere on television in 2017:

The new series will blast off [in January] with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.

… The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.

That last bit proves most intriguing. Will the new series be a continuation of the “prime” universe portrayed in the original series and its spin-offs? Or will this be a different kind of reboot? Either way, it’s exciting to contemplate what could be done with the property all these years later. Advances in technology and, more importantly, the growing sophistication of television storytelling suggest that anything could be possible.
