Looking for a new job? A new study has identified the cities with the best opportunities based on occupation.
Abodo, a search service for finding new apartments, analyzed data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to identify which of the top 50 metro areas have the most opportunities in each of a variety of fields.
The job field with the fastest growth has been high-tech. The second-fastest growing work category is in the area of community and social service occupations, followed by business and finance, construction, and health care.
The study looked at both the number of jobs available per 1000 population and at job density relative to the national average in the 50 largest metro areas in the country.
In the area of computers and math, the number one area for employment, not surprisingly, is Silicon Valley and its neighbor to the north, San Francisco.
The next leading tech area is the greater Washington, D.C., area that includes Northern Virginia and Maryland. Next is Seattle, which is enjoying a boom due in part to Amazon’s growth and also being the home to Microsoft.
In the field of community and social services, the top areas of opportunity lie mostly in the Northeast. Among the top cities are Philadelphia, Boston/Providence/Hartford, New York, Detroit, and Los Angeles:
For positions in business and finance, the top areas are Washington, D.C., Sacramento, Denver, and San Francisco. This category includes accountants, real estate assessors, auditors, financial analysts, human resource specialists, claims adjusters, loan officers, logisticians, training and development specialists, event planners, and similar employees.
The leading cities for construction/extraction jobs include Houston, Denver, Fort Worth, and Jacksonville. Other areas include Seattle, Riverside, Calif., Salt Lake City, Pittsburgh, and Jacksonville. This category includes electricians, carpenters. floor and carpet installers, roofers, and painters, etc. It also includes those involved in mining and oil exploration.
