5 of the Best (and WEIRDEST) Subscription Boxes

What was once a fad for meal prep has become a standard element in almost every feature of life. We’re talking about subscription boxes. It all started with Blue Apron — the subscription service that delivers fresh ingredients and simple instructions so that anyone can easily prepare an inspired meal in a short amount of time. But now subscription boxes are not limited to food — you can get them for anything from beauty products to accessories for your pets.

We found some of the best (and weirdest) boxes out there. It turns out that if you’re willing to pay for it, someone will send it to you.

Best:

Stitch Fix

For $20, a personal stylist will work with your preferences and curate a box of five items. While they are typically clothes, they can include shoes and accessories, like purses and jewelry. You keep what you like and send the rest back for free. The more you work with a stylist, the more they understand what you love (and hate) thanks to their extensive feedback system. You can get boxes for men and women, and sometimes they even waive the styling fee.

Butcher Box

If you are concerned about buying meat from factory farms, then this is for you. Butcherbox sources its meat from small farms, keeping in mind the health and well-being of the animals. The beef is grass-fed, the pork is heritage pork, and the chicken is organic. You can choose whatever combination of meat you’d like, and it all comes at a great value.

Kiwicrate

Keeping kids busy can be a challenge, but Kiwicrate has a great solution. For a low monthly cost, a new box arrives at your doorstep every month with age-appropriate activities for your kiddo. The activities range from arts and crafts to science, geography, and engineering. It’s basically a STEM lesson in a box, and kids love it. It also makes a great gift.

Harry’s

If you want quality shaving products and don’t want to break the bank, consider Harry’s. They have a staff of engineers who have developed blades that are precise and comfortable (and that come in at under $2 per blade). Your trial set comes with free shipping, and you can also get products for face and body care, as well as accessories.

Lola

Have you ever really looked at what a tampon is made of? And then have you ever considered the fact that it stays in your body for hours at a time? The creators of Lola are women who have created feminine hygiene and sexual health products for women. The tampons are made of 100 percent organic cotton, and the subscriptions are flexible. You can customize your box and have it delivered to your door before your period so that you’re never without the products you need.

And now on to the weirdest:

Skulls Unlimited

If you have an affinity for bones, then you might have heard of Skulls Unlimited. For $25 per month, you can get bone specimens, including skulls, teeth, claws, etc. from wildlife in the lower 48 states. According to the website, the specimens “are carefully prepared with the use of dermestid beetles then degreased and whitened using a chemical process.” Yikes.

Unicorn Dream Box

If you are the kind to drink unicorn Frappucinos and decorate with rainbows, then perhaps you would get a kick out of this. Starting at $20 per month, you can get your very own box of unicorn-themed stationary, makeup, and accessories. A small price to pay for rainbows and unicorns? Umm.

Slime Box Club

Considering you can make slime with glue and cornstarch, this seems a bit excessive. But if you have a whopping $30 per month to shell out, then you can leave the DIY slime to your friends’ kids. Each box contains three themed slimes, with anything from glitter to gemstones. Or, you can just buy glue and cornstarch. Just sayin’.
