The old saw about a broken clock being right twice a day hit the late-night landscape.
No, Stephen Colbert didn’t give President Trump credit for the roaring economy or admit the Russian connection to Team Trump remains to be proven.
One of his competitors shook his woke status, at least for two glorious moments.
Jimmy Kimmel, the former funny man who now cares more about #TheResistance than laughs, spoke two uncomfortable truths in one week.
First, the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” host addressed the imbroglio over Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Not once but twice vandals damaged the star, one of The Resistance’s signature triumphs. The West Hollywood City Council subsequently voted to remove the star, only the august body lacks the authority to make that happen.
The vote still generated headlines. Enter Kimmel, who shockingly didn’t leap to the council’s defense.
“This is none of their business,” Kimmel said. He wasn’t done.
“If you busybodies want to remove something from it, how about you adopt one of the 12 drunken Spider Men we have out there? They would be very happy in West Hollywood. Otherwise, stick to doing what you do best, West Hollywood: selling pot to German tourists, okay? You know who has a star right next to Donald Trump? Kevin Spacey has one right there. No one says a word about it. So vote on that tomorrow. Thank you. That is as close as I get to defending Donald Trump.”
The very same week Kimmel confronted hyper-left comic Rosie O’Donnell. The former “Queen of Nice” claimed that some of the folks attending Trump rallies aren’t there out of passion for the president.
“He pays people to show up at those rallies. That’s a fact,” she said on CNN, adding that it started the moment he came down the Trump Tower escalator to announce his presidential run.
She had zero proof, although media outlets didn’t exactly pounce on her claim, fact-checkers in tow. Kimmel simply applied a dollop of common sense to her rationale.
“Well, that is an interesting theory. Elevator, maybe. But the people at the rallies? I don’t know. I don’t know if I’m on board with the not-real thing. I mean this guy and these guys and this woman and these healthy fellas and this excitable gentleman and this friendly lady? [The camera showcases some less than glamorous Trump supporters who appear at his rallies.] They seem quite real to me, I don’t know. Besides, the idea that Trump is paying these people? Sorry, Rosie, but that is ridiculous. He doesn’t pay anybody, why would he start with them?”
He had to end it with a dig, didn’t he?
Still, Kimmel called her out in no uncertain terms. That’s more than conservatives have come to expect from Hate Night TV denizens of late.
