Death Cab for Cutie Leads Latest Anti-Trump Salvo

Let’s give it up for today’s celebrities. They’ve never worked harder … to change your minds come Election Day.

We’ve already seen the “Avengers” cast, the “Empire” team, “Star Trek” alums and a reunited “Will & Grace” try to derail the Trump Train.


That’s on top of the late-night hosts working en masse to praise Hillary Clinton and destroy Donald Trump.

They aren’t done yet.

Author Dave Eggers is the force behind “30 Days, 30 Songs,” yet another attempt to bring about a “Trump-Free America.”

Each day, the official web site will feature a new song by an artist eager to elect Hillary Clinton. First up: Death Cab for Cutie’s new song “Million Dollar Loan.” Aimee Mann also released a new song, and we can expect contributions from REM, Jim James and Thao Nguyen soon enough.

Here’s Cutie front man Ben Gibbard’s description of his new song:

While campaigning in New Hampshire last year, he attempted to cast himself as a self-made man by claiming he built his fortune with just a ‘small loan of a million dollars’ from his father. Not only has this statement been proven to be wildly untrue, he was so flippant about it. It truly disgusted me. Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unworthy of the honor and responsibility of being President of the United States of America, and in no way, shape or form represents what this country truly stands for. He is beneath us.

The artistic collective shared this rationale for the project:

He has shown the content of his character time and time again, and the very fact of his candidacy is a blight on the nation. His words incite hatred and celebrate inequity. Most troubling of all, over the past year, the country has become inured to the towering vileness of his rhetoric and deeds, his attacks on women, Mexican-Americans, Muslims, and those with disabilities. But we have to remember these acts, and act against them. In the words of Cornell West, we cannot become ‘well-adjusted to injustice.’


This isn’t Eggars’ first attempt to influence the election. Four years ago, he started a 90 Days, 90 Reasons to re-elect Barack Obama over Mitt Romney. Back then, Romney was under furious attack for using the term “Binders Full of Women,” a wholly innocuous comment the media transformed into a toxic talking point.

Romney also was right about his Russia predictions, and clearly would have steered the economy better than Obama 2.0.

Maybe voters got lucky that Eggars’ latest election year effort shrank by two-thirds.
