Who knew it was possible to be “unsure” about whether you married your brother?
A decade ago, Ilhan Omar was claiming that the suggestion she married her brother was thoroughly untrue and completely preposterous. Now, all of a sudden, after a Trump administration investigation, she is giving the most pathetic hedging denial ever. I think we all already know the answer to the question, and what we also know is that Omar changed her tune purely because she got caught.
In 2025, Times Now sneered at the suggestion that Omar‘s second husband was actually her brother. Of course, it helped the congresswoman’s story that she changed her real family name of Nur Said Elmi to Omar so that when she allegedly married her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, it didn’t seem so suspicious. It probably also helped her deny his murderous father's role in the Somaliland genocide. Part of Times Now’s defense was a 2016 statement to Minnesota Public Radio from Omar in which she labeled the allegations “absolutely false and ridiculous.” Fox News reported that she called the allegations “absurd and offensive” at the time.
In 2022, she called someone “sick” for suggesting she married her brother:
God no, Celeb this sick fantasy man. Please seek help, it’s not normal to want to marry your brother.

Incidentally, Omar's marital history — rather like her family's countless criminal charges and investigations — is incredibly tangled. Times Now and The Daily Mail acknowledged that she married Isra Hirsi in an Islamic ceremony in 2002, divorced him in 2008, married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi (who was trying to come to the U.S. from Britain) in 2009, and obtained an Islamic divorce from him in 2011. Omar immediately got back together with Hirsi, though she did not marry him legally until 2018, because her legal divorce from Elmi came in 2017. Then in 2019 Omar divorced Hirsi and the next year married Tim Mynett, her current husband, whose recently shuttered winery allegedly sold empty barrels of wine.
But to return to my original point, Omar has repeatedly and forcefully denied allegations of the incestuous marriage, which Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has since confirmed. Notably, Omar's immigration fraud could extend beyond the marriage to her brother and include her claiming citizenship through her father, even though she might not have been a minor at the time and he might not ever have obtained naturalization. The whole thing is a total mess.
Now listen to how different and how much more subdued Omar's sort-of-denial is this week:
Ilhan Omar is guilty and she knows it. What started as "I didn't marry my brother. This is a right wing conspiracy!" Has turned into "he wasn't my brother to the best of my knowledge." She's hoping prosecutors will believe she married her brother by accident. 👇 https://t.co/9Kg4qnOAg5

That is something you say if you know you are guilty and are starting to panic. Omar, like so many other Democrats and Muslim migrants, believed she was above the law. Now she’s finding out differently.
