Attitude Makes a Difference: Churchill and Analyzing Modern Leftism

Leftists seem to go out of their way to violate every moral principle of Judeo-Christianity, and to ignore every piece of advice, both on virtue and politics, from the great thinkers and leaders of the past.

For example, the great Winston Churchill, the UK prime minister who led his nation to victory against the Nazis and Italian Fascists, observed, "Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference." And attitude is one of the biggest problems with modern American leftists.

Leftists are always furious about something — usually the wrong something. They either come up with the entirely wrong solution to a problem, or they identify the wrong problem, or they just invent problems. Whether a real crisis has occurred, such as a natural disaster or a mass shooting, or there is no crisis, as with "climate change," their attitude is always pessimistic, accusatory, biased, irrational, selfish, and angry. They exacerbate problems, cheapen tragedies, and manufacture outrage. They fixate on violence, misery, division, and hatred.

Another wise saying from a great thinker of the past — St. Francis DeSales — is, "The business of finding fault is very easy; the business of doing better, very difficult." This actually complements Churchill's comment, and is equally applicable to leftists. It is so very much easier to criticize others than to improve oneself; Jesus Christ expressed this truth another way by warning (Matthew 7:5), "[C]ast out first the beam in thy own eye, and then shalt thou see to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye."

But that's why leftism is attractive to some people even though it is such a negative and hopeless ideology. Malcontents, victims, sluggards, many individuals with real or imagined ills are attracted to an ideology that tells them they have no responsibility for the way they act, how they live, or where they've failed.

Did you not get that job or promotion you wanted? Blame misogyny or racism. Are you not as wealthy as you could wish? "The system" is rigged against you and the rich are oppressing you. Are you living an unhealthy lifestyle and consequently unattractive? Maybe you're really a different "gender" or require "body positivity" affirmation. Did you fail a test? The grading was biased. Are you struggling in a relationship? It must be climate change-induced stress. The list of examples from leftist ideology could go on and on.

Now, of course there are real instances of irrational prejudice and large-scale injustice in this world. The issue is that leftists claim extreme prejudice and systemic injustice in every single situation, regardless of context, regardless of circumstances, regardless of merit. For example, earlier today, a violent leftist protestor brandished a loaded firearm at Border Patrol and resisted disarming. An agent shot him during the struggle to neutralize the threat. Democrats rushed to wail that eeeevil feds murdered an innocent protestor. The gripers never stopped to find out the facts. They simply know they hate Border Patrol, so they defend everyone who clashes with Border Patrol, and try to turn said violent protestor into a victim.

The victimhood mentality is the worst poison of leftism. Democrats use it to justify countless crimes and injustices, including wealth redistribution, property seizure, censorship, rioting, biased hiring, men in women's sports, abortion, illegal immigration, oppressive regulation, and race-baiting, among others. If your attitude is that you are a victim, you will always go back to blaming other people instead of improving yourself. Unfortunately, that's also the recipe for personal and societal catastrophe.
