Michael Collins, the great Irish revolutionary who wrested semi-independence for Ireland from the British but was assassinated on Aug. 22, 1922, once said, “We have to learn that freedom imposes responsibilities.” The Founding Fathers would agree, but Democrats certainly don’t.
Freedom doesn’t mean license, which is what many moderns claim. Rather, freedom means the ability to exercise certain inalienable rights from God while taking responsibility for one’s own life. The more a person is in control of his life, the more disciplined he is, the freer he is. Those who are dependent on the industry and money of others so that they can be excessively self-indulgent are not free, which is why societies that prioritize license over individual responsibility tend to become ever more dictatorial. That, of course, is why Democrats encourage sexual, political, and physical license, while actually cracking down on fundamental rights and freedoms.
For example, Democrats insist that people will be able to claim they are whatever sex they wish and use whatever pronouns they want to invent this week, even though Democrats simultaneously seek to crush free speech. They don’t want freedom of speech and thought; they want indulgence in mental illness.
Or again, Democrats encourage the utmost of sexual perversion as a “right” while simultaneously attacking the true right to life. If children can’t be killed before they are born, they must be castrated and/or set up for perpetual use and abuse and heartbreak. It’s not about freedom; it’s about the encouragement of corruption to enable more control by elites.
It’s the same problem in Ireland, too, as its leftist politicians are just as tyrannical as ours while paying the same lip service to “democracy” and “rights.” The Irish and Americans can both learn from Collins’s advice, and regain the moral and political greatness which our countries once boasted by so doing.

The main point is that because freedom requires responsibility, Democrats insist on encouraging irresponsibility. The Founders gained our independence because those who loved liberty understood that each of them had to take responsibility for his political future, even to the point of taking up arms. And as Abraham Lincoln warned us, if America falls, it will be from within — it will be because we stopped taking responsibility for our own freedom.
There are many ways to take responsibility, including obvious actions like voting, attending public rallies and events, and writing to elected representatives. But being free is also based on personal virtue and discipline, so educating children well, developing good habits, and pushing for Judeo-Christian principles at work, at home, and in the public square are also important. There are many American heroes to imitate.
We need to reject the propaganda of victimhood, of race-baiting, of “systemic oppression,” and of Marxist class struggle. As Collins so truly said, we have to learn that freedom imposes responsibilities — and that irresponsibility destroys freedom.
