Elitism in Action: Newsom Fights for EV Mandate As Sales Drop

If you want to see elitism in action, you can always count on California Gov. Gavin Newsom — or, as Donald Trump likes to say, Newscum. And as usual, Newsom is prioritizing his woke climate ideology over affordability and practicality. Because the peasants should sacrifice anything he tells them to sacrifice.

Electric vehicle sales are unsurprisingly slowing. Those who want the cars have bought them, and most people neither want them nor can afford them. But Newsom is doubling down on trying to save his dictatorial and impractical EV mandate from the Trump administration’s plan to ax it.

In May, the United States Senate voted to block California’s EV mandate, which would require all sales of gas-powered vehicles to stop in California by 2035. Newsom vowed, “We won’t stand by as Trump Republicans make America smoggy again — undoing work that goes back to the days of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan — all while ceding our economic future to China. We’re going to fight this unconstitutional attack on California in court.”

The ironic part is that EV batteries are totally dependent on the rare earth minerals market that Communist China overwhelmingly dominates using abusive labor, meaning that dependence on EVs is a bonus for China. Also, China dominates the manufacturing of EVs themselves. Further, the EV mandate is almost certainly unconstitutional. And then, the Supreme Court affirmed that fuel companies challenging the mandate have standing. Yet in June, Newsom signed another executive order pushing EVs despite the Trump administration overturning the state’s vehicle emission rules.

Another major hitch is that even California can’t incentivize or force people into buying EVs anymore. E&E News reported Monday, “Electric vehicles’ market share in California dropped again in the second quarter of 2025, largely on the back of declining Tesla sales, according to state data released Thursday.” EV fanatics are blaming the Trump administration for “attacking” electric vehicles, but the reality is that the risks and adverse outcomes of EV ownership speak for themselves.

EVs are unreliable, inefficient, and not at all reliable or practical for long-distance trips. Even leftist CBS News had to admit in 2023, following a review of Consumer Reports data, that EVs “have nearly 80% more problems and are generally less reliable than cars propelled by conventional internal combustion engines.” Hybrids had even more problems. Furthermore, EV batteries are very toxic to manufacture and dispose of, with a comparatively short battery life, and, as noted above, they rely on abusive labor in Africa and China. Forcing people to buy EVs will only make private transportation impossible for many Californians.

Of course, Newsom would probably be delighted if he made sure that only rich people could have private transportation. He is a Marxist who wants a world where most people are poor and dependent on the government. Private transportation represents freedom, and Newsom hates freedom for the masses. That’s why he unapologetically partied at the French Laundry amid his dictatorial COVID lockdowns. Likewise, in 2023, he flew a jet to a conference while saying he was going to take on big oil. And with his net worth of around $30 million, he can buy a new vehicle, whether electric or not, anytime he wants. Rules for you and me, but not for him.

Hopefully, this EV mandate ends up as dead as Gavin Newsom‘s conscience. It is an egregious instance of elitism, enforcing rules that only benefit politicians and rich people while punishing less prosperous citizens.
