DNC Chair: Hobby Lobby Ruling Means Republicans Want 'The Long Hand of Government to Reach Into a Woman's Body'

DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz signals where the Democrats will take today’s narrow religious freedom victory in the Supreme Court. The court ruled that government cannot force religious business owners to provide a narrow set of abortifacient contraceptives to their employees. DWS turns that entirely on its head.

DWS: “It sure is a rallying cry. It’s very clear to american women yet again that Republicans want to do everything they can to have the long hand of government and now the long hand of business reach into a woman’s body and make health care decisions for her. That’s totally unacceptable. This election, the election in 2016, particularly, here is — we can underscore for american women why who we elect president and who controls the congress is so significant for american women. Republicans want to constrict and restrict women’s choices…”

Every sentence after “rallying cry” is a lie. The Obamacare mandate put government and employers very much into personal choices and decisions in ways that they had not been involved prior. It’s the Democrats and those who support the mandate who want to lengthen the “long hand of government,” not those who oppose the mandate.

Today’s ruling was exactly what the Democrats from Obama on down actually wanted for political reasons. If there was a crisis in access to contraception in the United States — there isn’t — the Obama administration could have handled that without forcing anyone to violate their religious consciences. The Obamacare mandate was never about that. It is not about access at all. It was about creating a wedge issue, and giving the left a bloody shirt to wave going into what is shaping up to be a disastrous mid-term election for the Democrats. So, yes, it’s a rallying cry. It was always intended to be.

What today’s ruling actually does is restore the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which only racked up three dissenting votes when it passed.

The Democrats have truly become the party that boos God, at their convention, and believes there ought to be no space left at all for religious freedom.
