Has Herman Cain’s weird week turned into an absurd game of Clue now?

On Wednesday it was all the Perry campaign’s fault, which they categorically denied, and now the Cain camp has added Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to the list of suspects.

According to a source who is friends with the Cain campaign, not only is the Rick Perry campaign involved but also the Mayor of Chicago and former Obama White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is likely involved with the sexual harassment accuser attacks. A friend of the Cain campaign believes a National Restaurant Association (NRA) employee out of the Chicago office leaked the story to the Perry campaign via information and influence from Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office.

Again, no actual evidence is offered. The Perry campaign emailed me the following re-denial today:

“No one at our campaign was involved in this story in any way.  Any claim to the contrary is patently false.  The first we learned of it was when we read the story in POLITICO.” Ray Sullivan

At least in Clue, you have to go on the record yourself and name the guilty party, the weapon and the scene of the crime. Here we’re getting anonymous friends hitting out at campaigns and public figures to push back against stories based on anonymous accusers.

And how ironic, that Cain seems to be pushing back against what he calls “baseless” allegations by making baseless allegations of his own.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t even matter where the Politico got the tip or tips that led to their thin, vague story they shouldn’t have run. Cain suspected in 2003 when he ran for Senate that these allegations would come up. He tipped the world back in May that he expected it to come up at some point as he ran for president. He expected it to come out, yet he and his campaign still got caught flat-footed when it did. Whose fault is that?
