Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, kept his seat after a stiff challenge from a former member of the North Carolina House of Representatives.
With 93 percent of precincts reporting, Burr led Democrat Deborah K. Ross, an attorney from Raleigh, by 52-45 percent.
Burr had a slight polling edge going into the race. The campaign season had been a contentious one for the two rivals.
Burr slammed Ross for saying she would have voted for Obamacare and for a Project Veritas video that showed one of her donors comparing comparing African-Americans who back Republican candidates to Jews who aided Nazis.
Ross went after Burr for saying he’d block a Hillary Clinton Supreme Court pick and for a report that Burr, while looking at a gun magazine with Clinton on the cover, said he was “a little bit shocked” that it “didn’t have a bull’s-eye on it.” He apologized for the remark.
