The humble avocado has been an ultra-popular snack in 2017 due to its rich and creamy taste, but Isla Bonita, a Spanish food brand, has just announced the “Avocado Light.” This special fruit lasts longer and contains 30% less fat than your average avocado.

Avocado Light fruits can be harvested nearly all year, ripen faster, take longer to oxidize into an unappealing shade of brown, and contain a third of the fat of a normal avocado. To help put things into perspective, a regular avocado has 20-30 grams of fat and around 260 calories, but it is a monosaturated fat — the “good fat” that dieticians have linked to cholesterol reduction and a lowered risk of heart disease.
Ramón Rey, Isla Bonita’s marketing director, notes how the innovative avocado species tastes, and suggests a few ways to enjoy the new fruit:
Avocado Light is of course a daring product. We have launched a light fruit! Until now, this label was reserved for processed products; never fresh, and this, like everything new, is revolutionary in itself. This variety has a mild flavour and a juicier and lighter pulp that makes it ideal for the preparation of smoothies, cold soup, gazpachos, cocktails, etc. So now, avocado can also be drunk. It is time to rediscover this fruit and experience the many alternatives it offers throughout the day.
Unfortunately, Avocado Light fruits will be exclusive to Spain’s grocery stores for the foreseeable future, but if the “diet avocado” takes off, it may end up in a produce aisle near you someday.
