Salena Zito, reporting from Gettysburg:

In nine days, this town will commemorate the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s speech with a ceremony at the same Soldiers’ National Cemetery featuring the U.S. Marine Band, Governor Tom Corbett, and a reading of the Gettysburg Address.

One person who will not be among those honoring Lincoln is President Barack Obama.

The White House gave no reason why the president would not attend.

According to the National Park Service, Obama has never visited the battlefield as president.

In 2008, Barack Obama rolled out his presidential campaign in Springfield, Ill., where Lincoln announced his own presidential candidacy. Throughout that year’s campaign, Obama’s staff embraced similarities between the two men as part of his persona; he allowed them to encourage lofty comparisons – and, after he won the election, he recreated Lincoln’s 1861 train trip to Washington as part of his own inaugural spectacle.

He even took the oath of office on Lincoln’s Bible – twice.

Lincoln brought the country to a revival at an unlikely time with his address. He gave new meaning to the definition of sacrifice in service to the country, for the purpose of the preserving the country.

Lincoln was asked to speak here only as an afterthought. The request for Obama to speak has been sought for more than a year.

Read the whole, shameful thing.

Is it because Lincoln was a Republican? I can’t think of any other possible reason — you?

Could it be that the One is experiencing a bout of SELF-AWARENESS, and he has come to realize that an appearance at the commemoration of the Gettysburg Address would only invite invidious comparison between Lincoln and himself?....

NAH! He has a tee-time scheduled.

No, because he personally identifies with neither party. He identifies with the One.

He does not want to remind black voters that it was Lincoln and the Republicans who freed the slaves.

Lincoln: "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. "

President Petulant: "[T]he Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. . ." He fundamentally disagrees with the founding principles of this country so why go to a ceremony that honors them.

I think it's because Obama is finding himself in a scene from Inception. I think we're seeing the start of a major crackup, like the one "Double Down" says happened after the first debate. I bet he was actually planning at one time to go to Gettysburg and speechify with satisfaction on how far we've come -- we were once killing each other, and now we've all agreed on the ACA! The next tell-all book will provide details of his cowering, whimpering, freaking-out flight from Gettysburg as his presidency crumbled around him.

Interesting times lie ahead. What will he have to say re the state of the union in January? How long before his "malaise" speech? I think his malaise speech will be a resentful lashing-out at Americans for their impatience and selfishness. "We tried our best to improve things for the vast majority of Americans, but folks just don't think long-term in this country and they can't seem to see past their own needs. Our mistake was giving 'em too much credit."

Just as well. The Address was all of 270 words and clocked in at around 3 minutes, In your average Obama droning diatribe that is less that all the first person singulars or the "let me be clear", "Make no mistake", or "the time for talking " or blatant attacks.Even this egomaniacal narcissist knows he cannot match that force of prose in such a compact package. Few would even try . But this blabbermouth at least in this instance knows he has met his rhetorical match and then some.
The bum has been reelected anyway. He no longer wishes to deal with any of the rabble who is not mindlessly cheering his nonsense. And that goes double for anything and anyone related to the military.
Most of us knew in 2008 this man dislikes people except as props. All pols have that element, but most at least understand the trappings of the job include kissing the babies, shaking the hands, taking the photos. every other pol embraces this because its comes with the job. Clinton and Bush Jr, in very different ways even seemed to like interacting with the public. I have family member who met Clinton; the guy was gregarious and polite. Had a friend who lost a brother at the WTC on 9/11, and Bush Jr. was beyond decent with his family the day he went to the site. Obama believes he's above that retail stuff. When you've beene excused from doing the grunt work in Illinois and the MFM carries your water perhaps you really believe you a differentr kind of politician, one that doesn't have to bother with even the pretense of being nice to people.

I'll bet he doesn't want to be compared to Lincoln now.

It's because Lincoln was useful towards getting him elected.

Were Lincoln alive today, Obama would no doubt show his gratitude... by giving him an iPod, or something.

Obama had every opportunity in the world to be a great man. He concerned himself with looking and sounding like a great man instead.
