We Have Always Been at War with Eastasia
I so did not see this one coming:
Reuters source: North Korea is seeking permanent peace treaty with SKorea, U.S. to formally end Korean War
— Michael van Poppel (@mpoppel) August 24, 2012
That’s via SooperMexican, who adds, “This is rather surprising, given the antagonistic stance North Korea has taken against South Korea and the US.” No kidding. He goes on to ask:
But what would peace even mean?
North Korea is known for a brutally oppressive government that brainwashes it’s citizens to mindlessly worship the state. Just recently in the Olympics, a North Korean athlete was heard to say in a rare interview:
“I believe the great Kim Jong Il looked over me. … I am very happy and give thanks to our Great Leader for giving me the strength to lift this weight. I believe Kim Jong Il gave me the record and all my achievements. It is all because of him.”
Notice it’s Kim Jong Il he thanks, not the current leader, Kim Jong Sung. He is literally crediting a dead leader for his excellence in the Olympics.
Is this new regime open to real reforms?
Probably not. And when I searched Google News for anything more than Poppel’s tweet, this is all I could come up with:
North Korea on Friday called for an end to the hostile relationship between Pyongyang and Washington while reiterating it will pursue for a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.
That’s hardly the same thing as a permanent peace treat with Seoul, with whom Pyongyang is still technically at war (us, too).
So what the hell is going on north of the DMZ? As usual, nobody really knows.

Interesting, if true. And while it does confine 22 million North Koreans to slave camps, essentially, I’d do a peace treaty.
If they want to follow the China model and open up economically to a degree, while maintaining totalitarian control, I’d prefer that to a shooting war that at best would leave us 20 million brain-washed cult members who don’t know how to do anything for themselves. Not to mention picking up the pieces of a shattered Seoul.
Anytime you think about North Korea and you ponder what to do, try imagining it this way; North Korea is simply a bigger version of Jonestown Guyana. While the demographics are different in both the size and membership of the two cults, the end result with the North Korea cult will be exactly the same as it was in Jonestown.
Imagine if the Reverend Jim Jones had an Air Force, Navy and Army and the total control of lives of 60 million people within the borders of his little section of Guyana. Knowing what you know today about the arc of the life of Rev. Jones and his followers, would you entertain even for a moment talking with his representatives about, well, about anything at all? Knowing as you do, that the Reverend was able to condition his followers to the point to where they willingly killed themselves and their children on his orders, do you really think the North Korean cult leaders couldnt in a moment order the deaths of millions of their own people by starting a war? In the west, we always believe that the leadership of a country in some way cares about the people in the country. The history of North Korea shows no evidence of this and we should brace ourselves to the fact that the North Korean leaders will do what they do without any concern as to the lives of the population of that area.
Never forget that before the Reverend ordered the death of his followers and himself, a visiting congressman and several hundred innocent people, there were always a long line of other people who were willing to rehabilitate him and his beliefs. Remember that even when the horror was obvious to anyone willing to look, there were people ready and willing to look the other way. We all want peace and we naturally think that this idea is universal. Sadly, it is not.
My advice? Do not talk to the North Korean government about anything at anytime. Do not entertain anything from the cult that runs the geographic area known as North Korea. Accepting the idea of Peace from North Korea is like accepting a Coffee Cake from the kitchen of Rev. Jim Jones; you might eat it but if its all the same to you, I’ll skip it.
I smell an October surprise:
“President Obama fresh from killing Osama bin laden announced a peace treaty with north Korea, ending th Korean conflict after more than five decades which had previously been under an uneasy truce for decades. The agreement also includes a disarming of north koeras weapons program in exchange for an aid package designed to end hunger in the lone suffering country. Foriegn policy experts hail this victory over the country bush described as part of the axis of evil but left for Obama to deal with. Critics question the lax enforcement provisions of the agreement and the 500 billion price tag for the aid package. Jay carney dismissed these critics as right-wing extremists whose partisianship blinds them to the need for a president with obamas proven sucess in foreign policy, chosing instead to focus on trivial matters like the debt. Carney then renewed a call for romney to release his tax returns.”

Meh. Most people will ask, “We were at war with North Korea until now?”
The Norks are China’s dog barking in the night.
As long as it annoys and distracts the neighbors, China will feed it.
