Denver is Doomed
March 20th, 2012 - 1:48 pm
It’s unofficially official:
The big deal is done. Peyton Manning is a Denver Bronco. A person familiar with negotiations says that Manning and the Broncos completed his five-year contract worth about $96 million on Tuesday morning. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Manning is to be introduced at a news conference…
We’re getting rid of a young and exciting QB for an old guy with a neck problem.
Sigh.

So they take a young guy from Florida who wins despite not being very good and get rid of him before he has a chance to get good, in favor of an old guy (with a neck problem) who never beat Florida.
Reminds me of a Simpsons episode from back when the Simpsons didn’t suck.

Of course, the old guy with the potential neck problem is one of the best QBs since the late 1990′s, and a first ballot hall of famer. Plus, if healthy, there’s no reason he can’t play well into his 40′s.
Tebow might be good one day, but that’s going to take a while to get to. If healthy, there’s no question that Peyton’s great in the here and now. Plus, Petyon’s so good that he makes the players around him better, and reads defenses, very, very well.
Of course, I’d actually want Tebow on my Giants (not Jets). Why? Imagine the Giants doing this: Eli in as the QB, Hynoski at Fullback, Tebow as halfback (or TE), and Bradshaw as Running Back. Now, imagine you’re the other team’s defense. They’re busy freaking out and have no idea what play Eli’s calling.
Now THIS is the sort of argument worth having. Manning doesn’t have a potential neck problem, Manning potentially will never take another snap. Sure, he’s a first-ballot hall of famer, but that’s for past performance, not future.
The Broncos aren’t mortgaging the future with Peyton; his contract will be designed with potential injury safety mechanics.
But if the Denver doctors think Peyton’s healthy, and the organization thinks he’s still got it talent-wise, I think it’s worth a shot. And let’s face it: they weren’t going anywhere with Tebow at the helm. They might just do that with Peyton at the helm. Their defense is Super Bowl caliber already. Now their offense might be really good. That’s all they’ll need to go deep in the playoffs- if Peyton’s back.
I say the best ever quarterback, in the general kick-@ss sense. Like Payton, the best running back!!
Sigh.
Tim Tebow had a playoff win 6 years earlier in his career than Peyton Manning did. That’s all that needs to be said about that.
I hope he stays around long enough to take the reigns from Manning after his career-ending injury. 4 minutes into the first game ought to do it.
Oh, please. So do Joe Flacco and Mark Sanchez. Are you telling me you’d take them over a healthy Manning? As much as I love Flacco, he’s no Peyton.
Self-edit button. Use it.
I’m not saying I’d start Tebow over Manning. I’m saying that, given Manning’s injury history, having a backup QB who has been extremely successful taking over a team mid-season would be a really good idea. I’m also saying that Manning is a little overrated.
Nukeemhill is right. Tebow got a win in the playoffs because A) his defense was really good and B) the Steelers were so banged up on offense and defense that they practically handed the Broncos the win.
Peyton has the chance to make his own luck. Tebow got lucky, period.
As a die hard Carolina Panthers fan, I thought it was a huge mistake when they fired John Fox.
And his fast success at Denver confirmed my view, or so I thought.
But now… Hmm, maybe I was wrong.
Not a football afficionado, I see.
C’mon. Manning was cleared to play. There is no way that he isn’t an upgrade over Tebow. I enjoyed Tebow winning and sticking it to haters as much as the next person (especially since if he didn’t keep winning it made that loss da Bears had look worse), but he still can’t consistently throw the ball. And as a Bears fan I can tell you that you will get sick of watching QBs just good enough to not lose (if the defense plays lights out).
Tebow may be better then some QBs in the league and maybe even better then many QBs da Bears have started over the past…60 years. But you can’t take him over Manning.
Sorry, but Tebow is not a young and exciting QB. A young and exciting player perhaps. But not a QB.
I have a running bet with someone that Tebow will not be a starting QB by the end of the 2013 season. He has too many fundamental problems to be a reliable starter.
Whatever magic he pulled off this last season, while it was at the expense of my Chargers, was fun to watch. But it was a total flash in the pan.
He’s a great human being. I truly wish him well. But he’s not an NFL starting QB. You guys need to get over it and realize that you’ve got a massive upgrade on your hands.
Peyton has been cleared by every single doctor who has examined him. His issue is not his neck. Doctors have said repeatedly that he stands no more risk than anyone else on the field of suffering a neck injury.
It’s his throwing shoulder and arm that are the question. And everything I’ve read indicates that he simply needs to keep rehabbing it and getting the strength back. The simple fact that several teams courted him and ran him through physical tests and continued to pursue him to the very end indicates to me that he’s on track. And he passed his physical with Denver.
‘Nuff said. It sucks for the Chargers that Denver has snagged him. I wish he’d gone to Arizona (which, frankly, I thought was a better fit; Manning to Fitzgerald? Jeebus, that would have been fun to watch). And the Ravens get to play Peyton again this season. The bane of Baltimore’s existence.
If he’s really healthy, then he’s got 3+ years left in him. That’s gonna suck for the rest of the AFC. Especially with Denver’s D.
Barring long-term injury to Sanchez, I just won the bet.
No, Denver is replacing an overhyped overrated QB so deficient in throwing skills that they had to install an antique offense that defenses will figure out next year in favor of a guy who if healthy will be the best QB in the league.
Once again, the Broncos behave in a class less way, dumping the QB who put excitement in the stands and a playoff round win. The Broncos have been a class less organization since the last couple of years of Shanahan’s tenure, and Elway has failed to improve that at all.
Happy not to be a Broncos fan.
Denver just tradedTebow to the Jets for a 4th round pick. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/
Two picks: a 4th and a 6th from 2012.
Heh. Maybe G-d doesn’t want Tebow to leave Denver?
