SC GOP to Fornicators: F*** Off!
March 6th, 2012 - 3:20 pm
Before you can join the Laurens County Republican Party in South Carolina and get on the primary ballot, they ask that you pledge that you’ve never ever had pre-marital sex — and that you will never ever look at porn again.
Last Tuesday, the LCGOP unanimously adopted a resolution that would ask all candidates who want to get on the primary ballot to sign a pledge with 28 principles, because the party “does not want to associate with candidates who do not act and speak in a manner that is consistent with the SC Republican Party Platform.”
As is their right. But it’s their privilege to be idiots.

I take it that means Stormy Daniels is off the guest list, then?
not just shooting themselves in the foot, but blowing the whole damn leg off.
Was it the first, the second, or the third one?
Guess it’s social conservatives only in Laurens County, SC.
Stephen, you’re punking us, right? There’s no way that this could be true.
…
Crap. Now I am wishing for 2040 and SMOD to get here.
SMOD, supervolcano, Carrington Event, global thermonuclear war, pandemic, whatever – it’s just about the only way to fix what’s wrong with America – and the world, at large.
We humans are obviously not interested in fixing any of it. Results count, no matter the party/religion/ideology/nation/democrapgic, etc. No one on earth is producing good results, here. No. One. In fact, the reverse is true.
We (nations/religions/groups/organizations/corporations, etc)keep electing the same sociopaths, over and over again. We keep looking for a hero-saviour to rescue us, instead of changing what we do and why we do it and taking responsibility for ourselves and for our own lives. Everything that goes wrong is someone else’s fault – they weren’t pure enough, courageous enough or perfect enough, or else they’re crazy or evil or stupid or what have you. Plus, they smell funny, too. Nothing is ever our own fault. We’re perfectly innocent of any and all charges and sins and lapses in judgement, and we’re never short on ethics or other poor character traits. Every nation, demographic and religion on earth acts and behaves this way. You see it on every blog and website you vist. You see it in every neighborhood, village, town and city.
Actually fixing anything? Making life better for ourselves and for others? Hmpf. Not. A. Chance.
That’s the reality. Do the research.
…so, apparently, the only way any of it will ever get fixed is after it all crashes and burns… and the survivors start re-builiding.
Is there hope to avoid any of the chaos, running, screaming and dying?? Yes, but it’s a hope that’s as weak as dew under a summer sky.
So, they have high standards? What’s the problem? Remember, this was the standard not too long ago. People did not have pre-marital sex. Decent people did not have porn. If one ran for office, and it was found out that you violated this, it was a scandal. You lost the election. This was true for Dems, as well. (Of course, some folks were allowed to get away with it.)
Now, you think this is idiotic? Why? Because our culture has so decayed, that licentiousness is considered the norm and morality the crazy?
The Bible speaks of a time when “evil will be seen as good, and good seen as evil”. Well, here we are.
But then you have the temerity to complain about the lack of ethics in government, the low standards, the poor character of our politicians, and the mess we now have. Well, gosh!
Marc, you’re a bright guy — and therefore I’m sure you understand what bullshit you’ve just spewed on my very nice blog.
Human nature hasn’t changed one whit in 200,000 years, give or take. Or, in circa 6,000 years, if you swing that way. People have been doing it in and outside of marriage since the Dawn of Man and the First Boner. Always have, always will. What has changed is the brief interregnum of Victorian hypocrisy has ended. Or if hypocrisy is too strong a word, let’s instead say that we’ve stopped pretending.
The other thing that has changed, is what happens when there’s a pregnancy. In olden times, the woman either aborted (another common practiced since the First Boner) or the man would man up and marry the girl. But thanks to the welfare state, the latter has all but disappeared, making the former tragically common. I’m sure we agree on the part about the welfare state.
But you take me for a fool, if you think I’m going to believe you when you say that there was some pre-hippie Golden Age when “people did not have pre-marital sex.” Because you either take me for an idiot, or you are one yourself.
Apropos of nothing, I suppose, but I’m just salivating at Rick Santorum’s poor performance tonight.
Actually, there were many out of wedlock births. One of my mom’s childhood friends got pregnant and had an out of wedlock baby — and this was late 1940s early 1950s.
see also, Alexander Hamilton and William the Conqueror.
No, it was not bullshit. You are too cynical, buddy. Throughout most of history, pre-marital sex was mostly rare. The consequences were too dire. A woman had to have a man to provide for her. Life was lived near the edge of starvation. No man wanted to have to provide for another man’s child.
Affluence has changed that, of course. Even today, though, surveys show only half of High-Schoolers have sex. That percentage is way down from before. It used to be more like 1/4 or less, when I was in school. People often used to marry right out of school. In fact, that is how a guy got laid. He had to marry it.
I think the problem is, that the circles you run in, such licentiousness is accepted as the norm. You really do not know how the other half lives. There is still a great swath of America which abstains from such conduct. They save it for marriage. They marry early. They have lots of kids.
Mormons are heavily represented in this, as are Evangelical Protestants. Catholics often do, too. Devout Jews also often follow this path. 78% of Americans profess to be religious. Not all are devout, of course. Many stray, but many are righteous. It is not as rare as you think.
Did people used to have pre-marital sex in the past? Sure. It just was not as common as you would like to believe. The devout were far more numerous back then. I think people do not realize how high the standards were. I remember how getting to 1st base was a really big deal. Sorry, Steve, but I just have about 20 years on you.
I also have a different circle I run in. Try going to a church group. Not the services, but the other functions, like Bible study, or other things during the week. Meet the people and talk to them. It’ll really open your eyes about the other side of this discussion.
Yes, I agree about the welfare State. It has lessened the consequences just enough to make it tolerable. It’s still not good for the single mom or the kids.
Mark, my view is not in the least bit cynical — I think human nature is a marvelous thing. Which is why I find your denial cute, quaint, and ultimately harmful.
Seriously, Marc, you’re expecting us to believe that pre-marital virginity was the norm prior to the 60′s? That is risible on its face, and simply not borne out by study or anecdote. It’s so silly I don’t even know where to begin. I can see you’re immune to argument, so I’ll not waste my time but, dude, seriously? Oh well, at least that’s my morning chuckle taken care of.
Get rid of every single feminist family and divorce law. Get rid of alimony and divorce theft. Throw every family judge and divorce lawyer in prison.
Then we’ll talk your socon talk. I am sick and tired of you evangelicals giving women a pass when they divorce their faithful husbands so they can “find themselves” (what utter fembot BS). You failed to stop no-fault divorce, you fail to condemn women for their evil hypergamy.
Medieval traditional Christianity had a clue about human nature, you fake plastic evangelicals have no clue.
Get rid of the family judges before you start judging.
Great riposte, Steve. ROTFLMAO!!
And one last thing: What the fuck ever happened to “sin no more?” One premarital sin and the SC GOP will have nothing to do with you? How very unChristian of them.
Marc, even granting your argument, which I’m not, you think it is wise to force a pledge on such a thing? Geez, how many decent folks are you willing to turn away?
You’d likely either be voting for a liar or a complete geek. If a good candidate could pledge that honestly, good for him or her–really. But to exclude some guy or gal for being honest about getting some tail in high school is insane, to say the least.
I would wager that most of the Republican candidates for president this year met that standard.
Cain? Mmm, probably not. Looks like he was maybe getting some strange.
Pawlenty? A nice geeky guy. Yes.
Bachmann? Church lady! Yes.
Perry? Fighter pilot. No.
Gingrich. Player. No.
Romney? Yes.
Santorum? Devout Catholic, but a drinker in college. Probably. Yes.
Paul? Very old dude. Married his high school sweetheart. Yes.
Mostly yeses. 3 of 4 still in the race. How about that? Not a coincidence.
Your interest in the pants of high-school-age pols is… off-putting.
It’s idiotic because trying to monitor another person’s sexual behavior (that involves consenting adults) is a nonstarter for anyone concerned with personal liberty. On such subjects as sex, I answer to God and my wife, and that’s it. The Laurens County Republican Party is limiting itself to people who have either led very sheltered lives or who are very good at lying. Not the kind of people I want to hang with.
If the collective mind of a serious group of people can come up with these 28 high sounding principles, I can not even imagine the bloodletting that must have taken place at the first Constitutional Convention.
how long until the state and national republican committees say, “excuse me Laurens County, but you idiots need to sit down and shut up?”
Laurens County, SC, population 66,500 making the republicans look stupider by the minute.
I have a question. While I agree that it is not the government’s, nor the political parties job to legislate morality, it seems like you view the very idea of abstinence with contempt. The question is this
Even if it is human nature to have sex outside of marriage is it not more moral to be monogamous?
Is this some kind of response to Newt getting 42% of the vote in Laurens County? This seems to be closing the barn door after the stallion got to the mare.
Marc, Alex, et. al. The real issue is this: Not every Christian is saved at 12 years of age. Many of the staunchest, most reliable, faithful brothers and sisters are saved by Christ after they’ve actually done things worth being forgiven for. They know, because they have learned first-hand, why so many old mores and standards are just that. The LCGOP is foolishly limiting its ballots to naive, innocent ‘choir boys’. Foolish. If God can forgive, what leg does the LCGOP have to stand on? Why disregard so many potentially effective candidates?
I live in the state, attend church, believe in the Good Lord and his grace, but this is plain lunacy. And I guarantee you at least ONE of those LCGOP members has had an affair, looks at pron, and cheats on their taxes. AND goes to church and sits there sanctimoniously. The Good Lord doesn’t see any difference in those that “don’t qualify” and those LCGOP members who are lying thru their teeth.
Geesh, we’ve got a he11uva lot more serious problems like borrowing 54 cents of every dollar spent in this country.
