Ummmm, why not? I look at it this way, the goverment could’t pinch a penny even if it was hanging from a cliff and a penny was all there was to hold on to. A private company has every reason to pinch a penny even when it isnt hanging from a cliff. Profit. Eventhough funding for NASA is only a small portion of the budget, the government is notorious for paying way too much for stuff. How much more could be accomplished if those pennies were spent more wisely?

I am sure there are some political donors out there that he and his cronies will steer the funds toward. Political Payback Chicago style!!

even if we accept privatization of the space program as a good thing, it still ignores an important question. if obama is bent on wasting $787 billion on stimulus and another $100 billion on jobs, shouldn’t the stimulus and jobs be in the high tech, long range engineering and science fields, instead of filling potholes and putting up congratulory signs?

obama and the dems are going to spend the money. that is a given. stimulate high tech jobs of the future and upgrade science education as was done in the sputnik era. we would at least get some benefit.

Could it be that Constellation was a government program that was too broken even for Obama to stomach? Hard to say.

I tend to look at this as an example of a broken clock being right twice a day (unless it’s digital). I don’t know why he did it but it is the right thing to do.

As to the reason, one possibility is that the 3 main states impacted by this decision happen to be Florida, Texas, and Alabama. These states tend to elect Republicans. Just saying.
