Mini Review

July 15, 2009 - 8:40 am - by Stephen Green

Meant to say something about this weeks ago, but forgot. (How’s that for a clever excuse?)

About five minutes in to “Gran Torino,” mostly what I was thinking was, “Another Clint Eastwood movie where he plays a grumpy old SOB who communicates mostly through grunts? It’s a fine genre, but getting a little tired.”

Ten minutes later I was so not thinking that any more, and totally in love with the movie. Check it out if you haven’t already.

I thought it was a great movie, too. It had all the earmarks of classic, great, and stock Clint, but the story blossomed to another level. Great story about redemption. Still, my favorite scene is when he saves the girl from the gangbangers and turns to her supposed friend, the doofus white guy trying to be hip, and says with that great gravelly voice, “Shutup pussy.” Replayed that several times for laughs!

Judging by how long it’s been in the ‘Very Long Wait’ category in my Netflix queue, I’d be better off just buying the effing disc. But nice to hear again how good a movie it is. Yay. :)

  3. I started watching it last week on a short flight – I only had time to get about 25 minutes in before we landed. I ordered it from Amazon when I got back and I’m looking forward to finishing it (in HD instead of that tiny airplane screen).

Just saw it over the weekend. I thought it was great and would definitely recommend it too.

I completely agree! This was by far the best movie of 2008 IMO, and one of the best movies of the past several years. I bought it and I’m glad I did, even though the DVD “extras” aren’t much, but I definitely want the option to watch and re-watch.

  6. The “Pussy!” in the scene Brad refers to is Clint’s real-life son.
I loved the movie, but it’s not perfect…
Some of the acting/dialogue was improvised and falls a little short for me.
Nevertheless, I found myself reaching for the tissues at the close.
    Now I own it.

I really like the film too. It is a sister file to _the unforgiven_.

The aforementioned scene was good, but my personal favourite was when they were trying to “man up” Thao at the barber shop…
