Maybe I’ve just gotten too cynical over the last couple of years, but when I read this…
In an audio tape broadcast on Aljazeera, Osama bin Laden has warned that al-Qaida was preparing an attack very soon, but also offered Americans a “long-term truce”.
…all I can think is, “How will the press spin this as a loss?”
MSM Talking Points:
Osama is a man who loves peace.
George is warmonger.
Howard, Harry, Nancy, Hilary et al will do everything they can to pursue peace.
To me the lede seems to be ‘its only a flesh wound’.
Or ‘we’ll call it draw then’ after the Black Knight’s last leg is cut off.
That and the imagery of planning a big attack in a cave in pakistan and then getting endless ringing when you try to contact one of your operatives to enact the plan.
Long Time, No Hear
It seems that Osama Bin Laden may have resurfaced again:
CAIRO, Egypt — Al-Jazeera on Thursday broadcast portions of an audiotape purportedly from Osama bin Laden, saying al Qaeda is making preparations for attacks in the United States but offe ….
Well, does this quote from OBL:
“The new operations of al-Qaida has not happened not because we could not penetrate the security measures. It is being prepared and you’ll see it in your homeland very soon”
sound like the same thing as this quote from AP:
“The voice on the tape said heightened security in the United States is not the reason there have been no attacks there since the Sept. 11, 2001, suicide hijackings. Instead, the reason is ‘because there are operations that need preparations,’ he said.”
???
Hard to say without access to the whole tape, but it seems to me that the OBL quote is ambiguous at best and the AP gave it the best possible interpretation for OBL. At the very least the AP story on Yahoo News places places a different emphasis on the matter.
Also interesting that OBL seems to be reading the DNC talking points again.

Osama Bin Laden who has been ready to surrender since 1997 if only the Republicans hadnt distracted Bill Clinton with that ugly made up sex scandal – Many scolars say that BIll Clinton was the last legitimate President of the United States.
4. The Maureen Dowd model
Poppy called rummy yesterday and then he drunkedly hung up the phone and called rove who was busy talking to his lawyers as he spilled his guts on Cheney, who is guilty as sin and we all know it dont we!
Later that day, Rove called Condi who was crying about not being able to get a man ( which happens alot these days ) and she told Dubya something he didnt want to hear – that Osama was ready to give up.
Expect Condi to be fired within the week.

See, running away really is a working military strategy.

Now that America has waged an unfair and one sided war on the badly misunderstood group of neighborhood activist who we know only derisively and dismissiely as “al queda”, can now consider showing the world that we are truly sorry for our crimes by finally paying reparations to the people who were illegally attacked and persecuted under the guise of the “War on Terror”.

Coming so soon after that missle strike that “only hit innocent women & children” my take is that we seriously damaged AQ’s leadership and they need a breather to regroup and train new guys. No truce, but if they want to surrender that’s fine by me.

When I read about Osama’s “peace offer” earlier today the first thing I thought of was the “peace” Mao made during WWII with Chaing.
Over the next few days it should be intersting to see how many suckers take this “peace offering” seriously.
If I had to guess, the spin will be:

So Osama is offering to return to the 9/10 status quo ante, where we both left each other alone? Riiiiight… ‘cuz that worked so well, didn’t it?
I don’t think this is directed at “us” (meaning the Bush administration or US citizens) so much as at Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi.
This is an absolute proof that OBL is working for Bush. Just before the 2004 election, Kerry pulled within a point of Bush who was sinking fast from leading 52% to about 48-47 over Kerry in Intratrade contract at http://www.chicagoboyz.net/. Two hours after OBL’s pronouncement, Bush’s poll rose. Now, he reminds us with the Democrat’s talking points when Bush’s in that NSA wiretap dodo. The fact is OBL was captured in Tora Bora in 2001. Instead of parading him around in June 2004 as Albright feared, Rove does one better, he parades OBL whenever Bush’s poll goes down. OBL is really a gift to Bush that keeps on giving. In WWII, after capturing German spies, the Brits turned them in their operation XX (Double Cross). Bush always imagines himself a born-again Churchill, so why not adopt his Double Cross too: secure OBL in a secured location which the VP has vacated and send OBL tapes whenever Bush’s poll is down. It is so unfair that Bush takes advantage of OBL, an inspiring courageous freedom loving minute man of the Religon of Peace, we demand a Congressional and/or a Special Consel inquiry. Bush should not be allowed to profit while our troops are dying like flies in Iraq and Afghanistan. Put Rove/Bush/Cheney in jail, someone has to pay. (Signed Reid, Pelosi, Dean, Clinton, Murtha)
Paula: hopefully none, since Osama didn’t offer peace, he only offered a “long term truce”(How long? Well at least as long as it takes Osama to nurse himself back to health and rearm his camps, though probably not much longer than that). But unfortunately, more than a few will fall for this faux olive branch.

Ofcourse, I don’t know why I’m laughing when more than an insubstantial portion of Americans actually think along those lines.
Seems to me that Osama is admitting that the WOT is in fact in Iraq, where the Libs insist it isn’t. In effect, the Z-bros have also been saying this for some time, haven’t they?
I too take Osama’s statement as one from or indicating weakness. Full speed ahead, guys.
I am surprised that I have not seen anyone comment on how the technique of offering a truce while weak, then attacking when one has regained strength, is straight from the Koran. It’s exactly what Mohammed did. There’s even a particular Arabic word for such a truce, and scholars confirm its purpose: a temporary cease fire to allow time to gather one’s forces and regroup.
