Congratulations to the Houston Astros, for a well-deserved NLCS win. That goes double for Roy Oswalt, who pitched an almost perfect Game Six against my Cardinals. That said, here’s to hoping that Houston gets smeared by the White Sox.

What IS it with St. Louis teams, anyway? They can rock the entire season, but when it comes down to the wire, they always choke. Hmph.
When everyone was talking about the Cards’ momentum coming into tonight’s contest, all I could think of was Earl Weaver’s old saw that momentum in baseball consisted of tonight’s starting pitcher. Oswald proved that to be true yet again

Down here in Houston they do, though I was rooting for the Cards. On Tuesday night, when they were down 4-2 on their last out, I got up from the couch, saying “I can’t watch.” Tried it again last night, didn’t work.

Headline in the today’s Houston Chronicle, in a type size suitable for announcing the end of the world: “Houston, We Have a Pennant”.

That sounds like every Astros fan I’ve ever known. until last night anyway.
I’m not a big baseball fan, but hey, it’s a Texas team. We might have reigning champs in two pro sports. Cool.

The AP reported that the chant was “Let’s go Cardinals”, but I distinctly heard them saying “…Astros” in the background.

Yeah. Boo freakin’ hoo for St. Loser. Their dump of a stadium. Their CF who slows down on fly balls so that he can make a dramatic catch (nice play — keep ypur eye on the ball is a T-ball lesson, no?).
Oh. And let’s not forget their classy fans who booed the new NL champs off the field. Nothing like being gracious in defeat.
I’m not cheering for either Houston or the team 8.1 miles south of Wrigley, but thank god Tony LaRooosa is gawne.

Get a clue Chuck… after it set in the crowd remained standing and appluaded. I dont care if some yahoos booed, St Louis has the best fans of any sport anywher in the world. Period. Fact. Have you BEEN to the stadium? The last remaing bowl-type multi-purpose stadium was kept clean enough to eat off the concourse.
Why I am waisting my time with an a-hole like yourself is beyond me.

Oh, I’ve been there. I’ve seen the “best fans” up close and personal.
Had to take a 7 hour shower and use Ovide shampoo afterwards.
What’s so dislikeable about the Chisox or the Astros? I usually vote for the A.L., owing to allegiances built before the d.h., but I do warm to the notion of two lifers like Biggio and Bagwell getting a ring, and the prospect two home-town guys like Pettite and Clemons getting it done in Houston is kind of fun as well.
Houston in 6. Why? History.

I’m a life-long Astros fan. My dad has been a ‘stros fan since he moved to Houston in the 1970s. After all these years of making the playoffs, being close, FINALLY!

StevenDB, SG — I’m torn. I should root for the Astros because they’re from Texas and that will piss off everyone around me in LA. On the other hand, the White Sox haven’t gone all the way in a century and something there is in a middle-aged mick that cannot scorn the underdog…
Love the love my Sox are getting from you folks.. Same love we got all year and here we are kicking ass and taking names. Goodbye Houston, nice knowin’ ya. I’ll be sitting my butski in Comiscular Park on Saturday for Game 1 of the World Series and rooting for the team with the longest drought since those Bo-Sox from last year.

Xixi: Nonsense. That wasn’t tacky. That was perfect. Honest admiration and partisan bitterness both tersely and elegantly expressed. This particular Houstonite (who, thanks to a lifetime spent as an Astros and Rangers fan, knows exactly what Stephen is feeling), never liked Stephen more than I do right now.

When the TV folks were talking about the end of Busch Stadium, they were showing old film clips and said “Who could forget game one of the ’68 series?”…Answer–I could!! When I think of the ’68 series, I think of GAMES FIVE, SIX, and SEVEN!!!! And MIckey Lolich!! And Cash, Kaline, Horton. Northrup, McAuliffe, Stanley, Wert, and Freehan!! The late NBC newsman and life long Cubs fan John Chancellor had a theorum which stated the team with more ex-Cubs on the roster was doomed to lose the WS. I first became aware of this when he stated it in a commentary on the eve of the 1986 Series, showing the rosters of the previous several WS participants and then pointing out that the Mets had no ex Cubs and the Sox (the true ones not the ChiSox) had one-Bill Buckner.
The ChancellorCubFactor has held true when applicable ever since.
The White Sox have no ex Cubs; the Astros have Jose Viscaino.
ChiSox in 6, 5 if Pettitte doesn’t win G2.
However, there is little more revolting to a baseball fan than the thought of Jerry Reinsdorf hoisting the WS trophy.
