Obama Combining Visit to Oregon Shooting Victims with Fundraising Swing

President Obama is visiting Roseburg, Ore., on Friday to meet with the families of the Umpqua Community College shooting victims.

That news was leaked to White House reporters at the beginning of the week.

Today, the administration revealed that this visit will be combined with Democratic Party fundraisers in the Pacific Northwest.

Obama is scheduled to appear at both a closed-press DNC event and a Seattle event with Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), a luncheon at the Westin Hotel with the Washington State Democratic Party.

That same day, Obama flies to San Francisco for another DNC event.

Obama’s fundraising swing continues in California on Saturday with more DNC and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee events in Los Angeles.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest confirmed at yesterday’s briefing that Obama’s Friday morning visit to Oregon fits in with “a previously scheduled trip to the West Coast.”

“So it does not require a significant change in his travel plans for him to travel to Oregon and spend some time with the families of those who were either injured or killed in the tragic shooting that occurred there last week,” Earnest said.

“I would not anticipate much of a public appearance from the president. His — the stated purpose of his trip is to — is to spend some time with the families there that have been affected by this outrageous act of violence.”

After Obama directed his policy team to try to come up with gun-control executive actions, Earnest said there’s no timeframe “for, you know, if or when any additional executive actions might be taken,” but “obviously the president’s team is hard at work on them, and has been for some time, considering what other options may be available to the president to try to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.”

“There are some common-sense things that Congress could do to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and others who shouldn’t have them, that — in a — in a way that doesn’t undermine the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans,” he added.
