Why Isn't Tax Day a Holiday?

Tax Day is upon us.

That makes some people happy. “I am proud to pay taxes and make an investment in my community,”  declares Ali Mickelson a Colorado tax policy analyst. The National Constitution Center calls Tax Day a “Civic Holiday.”

There is a song celebrating tax day!

Is this really a day to celebrate?

The average American shells out 28 percent of their income in taxes (almost 2/3 of  that for federal income tax). For that hefty price tag we get some services, but get tons of regulations which wind up costing even more than the taxes.

Americans, griped Senator James Lankford in a hearing on the Hill, “spend their time and treasure completing forms and federal requirements….”

The cost of complying with just federal regulations costs us $1.882 trillion.

And, the red tape keeps rising.

That’s why many are as excited about tax day as the Red Wedding.
