Because they’ll be killed if they do. Duh.

During his Monty Python days he poked fun at everyone from the Establishment to Christianity.

But thanks to the threat of ‘heavily armed’ fanatics, Michael Palin has admitted there is one comedy taboo he is too scared to break- Islam.

The 70-year-old said religious sensitivities have increased so much since his comedy days it would now be impossible to make 1979 film Life of Brian – which satirised the life of Jesus – let alone laugh at Muslims.

He said: ‘Religion is more difficult to talk about. I don’t think we could do Life of Brian any more. A parody of Islam would be even harder.

‘We all saw what happened to Salman Rushdie and none of us want to get into all that. It’s a pity but that’s the way it is. There are people out there without a sense of humour and they’re heavily armed.’

Mocking Christianity is the safe thing for “edgy” comics to do. Has been for decades.

Only one major comic goes anywhere near mocking Islam. Jeff Dunham’s puppet “Achmed the Dead Terrorist” is a failed suicide bomber who has already earned a fatwa of sorts. And he doesn’t really lampoon Islam in the way that Python once took on the Catholic Church’s birth control policies in The Meaning of Life. Achmed is a send-up of suicide bombers who, by definition, aren’t really around to make any fuss about it.

I suggest we set aside a day each year (maybe April Fools?) on which we mock every religion, and every belief system, to our hearts' content, sparing none. It will be a good way to distinguish those beliefs, and organizations, which really are peaceful from the ones the police ought to be watching every day like hawks.

I fail to understand why countries like Holland and Sweden insist on punishing politicians who speak the truth about those people. Will it take another Holocaust to get them to extend their existing laws against neo-Nazis to these more-dangerous groups?

The only reason Life of Brian couldn't be made today is because it'd be a little passe. Of course he had to include that little bit of moral equivalency, otherwise it'd be seen as a criticism of Islam. He could easily find himself in the Old Bailey for crimes against the unofficial state religion. If he was lucky.

As I understand it, if someone blasphemes against Mohammad, or against Allah, then they have committed a crime against God, and must be made to pay. Out come the knives or the stones.

What I don’t understand is that if Allah is the offended party, and he is so akbar and all, why does he need any help? Why can’t he deal with the problem in the old-fashioned way, like with the ground opening up, or a bolt of lightning, or a good smite? He can’t even arrange a good paper cut without his thugs getting involved.

I will say at least he admits it's fear, not the multi-cultural respect other culture rubbish that some many of the brave left hide behind.

In the immortal words of Howard Cosell "Down goes Palin, Down goes Palin, Down goes Palin"!

Muslims also kill you if you try to escape Islam. Oh, THAT explains the low apostasy rate.

Forget comics, I'd like to see politicians start speaking frankly about the myriad of evils in the islamic world due specifically to that dreadful "religion".

As much as I love Palin (he is the funniest human being ever to live), he's crazy. Not only could they make "..Brian" today, they could make it even MORE stinging. Christianity is mocked on many shows, such as "Family Guy" and with no lasting aftereffects to Seth McFarlane.

But what CAN'T be mocked? Gee, let's take Python as an example: Today you can buy a DVD of "Life of Brian" - no problem. But if you buy a DVD of the old "Flying Circus" TV series, you'll find that some gay jokes have been edited out. One instance of this is the ad for the fake TV show "Dad's Pooves!" which was referred to as "the wacky world of unnatural sexual practices!" That's now - poof! - gone.

But Achmed isn't The Prophet or Allah. That specific mockery would be deadly.

It's not a phobia if they really are trying to kill you. "Come and see the violence inherent in the system!" Monty Python is being repressed.

I'll bet if there was a dollar in it, some comedy troup could make "Life of Brian" today. Not long ago there was Piss Christ, Chocolate Jesus, and a Madonna covered in cow dung. I sure don't recall any Christians attacking any artists over those pieces.
Edgy comics and edgy artists can mock Christians until the cows come home, with impunity. But they all look at what happened to the artists and publishers with the Mohammed cartoons from 2005.
