Yuval Levin breaks down what the Obama administration is now attempting, in order to save Obamacare.

As usual, it’s hard to tell just what’s going on inside the administration regardingObamacare, but I don’t think we can really take the steps announced by HHSyesterday as anything but a bright, red, flashing warning light about the internal expectations regarding January.

Some of what they announced is frankly bizarre and slightly crazy. Beside extending the high-risk pool program (which isn’t nuts, just a strong indication that they’re not ready for January at this very late stage), they are asking insurers to pay claims for consumers who haven’t paid their premiums, to treat out-of-network doctors and hospitals as though they were in-network, and to pay for prescription drugs not actually covered by the plans they offer.

Obamacare, the law that Barack Obama signed after Democrats sent it to him, allows for none of this. These powers are not in the original law and they’re not in the regulations.

The “strong suggestions” are an attempt to put the blame on insurance companies for anything that goes wrong in healthcare, going forward. “We tried,” Obama will say, “but the insurance companies put their own profits above your health.” So he’s covered if they decline to comply. His base has already bought that lie, and will back him, and that’s all he really cares about. He has lost credibility with the majority. He may cost the Democrats the Senate next year. But he already has plans in place for losing the Senate but expanding his own power by rendering Congress irrelevant.

If the insurance companies go along with HHS’ “strong suggestions,” they stand the risk of bankrupting themselves, as the “strong suggestions” would have them pay out for services and drugs for which they may never be compensated, and for which they may never collect premiums. That’s not a bug, but a feature of where Obama wants to take healthcare in America.

Obama has therefore set himself up to use failure to claim that the only solution is government-run, single-payer healthcare. Which has been his goal all along.

The smartest man in the room just devised an "insurance" program that you can't actually purchase, that doesn't have your doctor or hospital, that "covers" you for things not in your plan, with premiums nobody has paid to "balance" the risk of a pool of all high risk subscribers.

He has devised an Iranian policy that not only removes sanctions, it pays for a nuclear enrichment program that is untouched by the agreement so that Iran can be given the time and money to show that they intend to do exactly what they please.

He has built a border and homeland security policy that sues states for protecting the border and hires people who want to kill lots of people of "non-color". 13 million border crashes may not all have stolen identities...but the Obamacare website is taking care of that.

Epic fail sure does resemble Cloward-Piven...except for the claims of "no intent", that is.

Because a claim of actual intent...would be honest. And we can't have that now, can we?

It's going to crash so much more than just the health insurance industry. This industry doesn't just set on their money, they invest it, so when they don't have this money to invest, the investment industry is going to crash, along with all our retirements. It's the plan, crash the economy and destroy the country.

If these insurance companies take actions that violate state and federal laws, they are subject to criminal prosecution at both the state and federal levels. No? If your portfolio has a financial interest in these companies which loses value due to corporate malfeasance, you have a civil claim. No? Yes, we know that our system of justice at the federal level is broken, but that still leaves the states to take actions when any insurance company violates the law.

every day, with every new screw-up, we slide further and further down the drain into dictatorship. inch by inch, step by step. and what does rep. boner do? he tells piglosi to just slow down and wait until next year when together they can finish the country off by giving every illegal 3rd world p.o.s. amnesty, thereby insuring a permanent minority majority, and destroying what is left of our once great country. like children so excited by their breakage and destruction they can't wait to get their destructive hands onto the next irreplaceable relic.

and the stupid sheep go baaaah. and the dumb cattle go moooo, as they move through the chutes on their way to death, by denial of services. sold!down the river by sorry looking clutches of crows (lawyers) counting their coin and loving their special benefits and status amid the chaos and confusion.

who would have thought the vermin would have used our own wealth and sense of fair play to destroy us? we are paying these people Big salaries (and whatever they can steal) to destroy us. alas, we are undone!

Having grown up during the Cold War, I always figured that the communist dictatorship would be ushered in with the bourgeoisie dangling from lamp posts, not with a flood of Prozac paid for with a hot check from Uncle Sam. But make no mistake - Obamacare is one big Death Panel. And that panel has ruled against the working class. Now, please take the door on your left and walk down the ramp.
