Former comedian Bill Maher tends to be a hater of all things Christian and to his political right, but on Friday he wondered aloud why liberals won’t criticize Islam. And then he answered: Because other liberals will then accuse them of “racism.”
He then skewered that position, because as he notes the obvious, Islam is not a race.
Of the rest of the panel — atheist Richard Dawkins, crockumentary film maker Michael Moore, outed desk jockey Valerie Plame and Rev. Of No Church Al Sharpton — only Dawkins reacted sensibly.
The first to criticize Maher, and slam Christianity as worse than Islam, ironically was Rev. Sharpton. “There were Christian klansman that were Christians, KKK members, who burned crosses,” he said. Sharpton is living in the past. There was also a rotund reverend who hoaxed America and has blood on his own hands from his early, more violent days, but no one on the panel brought that up. Sharpton is hardly in a position to criticize any Christian or anyone else for their actions, but his leap to defend Islam raises a question: When did Rev. Sharpton convert? Or did he merely renounce Christianity but not the benefits of being called “reverend”? Sharpton did sign on with the Obamacare god last week.
Moore plays his usual useless and insight-free role. Plame, the former intelligence agent, conflated a few dozen “Christian dominionists” with the millions of Islamic terrorists around the world and within the U.S. She even insisted that these “dominionists” have infiltrated the U.S. military’s officer corps. You know who else infiltrated the U.S. military officer corps? A Maj Nidal Hasan. He doesn’t rate a mention, though.
It’s Maher who brings some sense back to the panel.
“Do they have a farm system? Do they have websites? Show me the country that has the Christian fundamentalist training camp where they’re on the monkey bars,” Maher shot back.
“This is not just the same. Look, I’m no fucking Catholic or a Christian, but one is herpes and one is cancer,” Maher said.
“I’m asking who’ve they killed, or who’ve they threatened,” Maher also said.
“I can guarantee to you that right now there are Christians out there tonight that want to kill you and me,” Michael Moore, a Catholic, said to Maher.
“But they don’t,” Maher responded.
“We have to have special extra security here. We don’t have to have special extra security here when there is a Christian who is pissed off,” Maher said to his panel.
“Remember in the 90s when Rudy Giuliani was mayor and they had that Piss Christ art exhibit in Brooklyn? And Rudy Giuliani was, I mean, he was pissed. Christ, was he pissed. But, it didn’t jump to, ‘and, we’re going to kill you.’ You see?” Maher said.
The entire discussion is disturbing. All of these mainstream “progressives” hate Christians, including Maher. If the panel reflects majority “progressive” opinion, then the same “liberals” who roundly and routinely criticize Christians have no problem defending radical Islam. They see the happy-talking evangelical megachurch down the street as more of a threat than the mullah who exorts his flock to murder. Sharpton truly comes off as someone who is entirely uncomfortable defending the “home team,” even though he has “Reverend” in front of his name. Plame and Moore come off as so willfully misinformed that they’re hopeless. One of those two influences millions of minds through mass media and exercises profound influence within the Democratic Party. The other only influenced U.S. foreign policy when she worked at the CIA.
