Two Freedom Flights of veterans, one from Iowa and another from Mississippi, arrived in D.C. today to visit their war memorials, but were halted by barricades. Many of the veterans served in World War II and in Korea. As Bryan Preston noted in an earlier post, several House GOP members intervened to make sure those vets could visit the World War II Memorial.

I happened to be driving by, and received a phone call from a congressional staffer telling me what was going on. I caught some of the scene on video just as several busloads of Freedom Flight vets were about to leave.

In this first video, Rep. Michele Bachmann (MN-6) describes the sequence of events leading to the members of Congress intervening:

Here, Rep. Louie Gohmert (TX-1) explains why he and his colleagues crashed the Park Service barricades:

Needless to say, the Park Service was not happy. This spokeswoman, who didn’t explain why she hadn’t been furloughed, tried her best to castigate the members of Congress without appearing cold-hearted:

She explained that any enforcement action taken against the congressmen will have to be decided by her political-appointee bosses.

NextGenerationTV’s Michelle Fields tweets that Park Police have shown up on the scene to expel any remaining vets.

Silly Obama. You think the men of Normandy, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Guadalcanal, Bastogne, Monte Cassino and countless other perils would be deterred by a ROPE?

Why is the ObummerCare sign up offices and website open for business?

Where do they get the money for that and the guts to turn old vets away from an unguarded memorial?

The pettiness of these morons (Zero and the democrats) is beyond belief.

I'm not aware that there were any park rangers normally at the WWII Memorial. So why where they there TODAY?

It's just one more example of the political class trying to inflict maximum pain for minimum benefit for any governmental cutbacks.

The website for the Memorial claims it is open to the public 24 hours a day.

This is Obama trying to deliberately cause more pain than necessary in the hope it makes people hate Republicans.

This stuff could backfire. Every previous President of both parties has negotiated with his opponents in Congress right up to the last minute, and most of the impending shutdowns were averted by compromise. Obama and Reid are proud - no, arrogant - in their declaration they won't even consider compromises.

The main difference between God and Obama is that God doesn't think he's Obama.

Surprise! Obama-Care is funded by its own statute and the tax changes, it doesn't need appropriations! The Continuing Resolution can only trim some marginal expenses, it isn't significant.

So why are we trying to use it to "defund" Obama-Care? Good question! This whole thing came about from actions on the spur of the moment without planning or consultations.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know why the park service official has a black band on her badge? I can think of lots of good reasons, and one bad one. If she's working a memorial site, and wears it because of that, I'd say that's a nice touch. If it's because of a park service ranger getting killed in the line of duty, I'd say thank you for your service.

But...if it's in mourning for the government shutdown...

Ann in L.A. -- Unfortunately, I'd say it's the latter. When someone's passed in the line of duty, the black band is ALWAYS on an angle from top left to bottom right. THIS band is blacking out her name or badge #, or both. So wtf is she DOING there, IN UNIFORM?! "volunteering" her time to keep vets from their OWN MEMORIAL?!?!
